I just replaced the head in one of my project 22re trucks. I got the following for compression:

#1 160 psi
#2 185 psi
#3 190 psi
#4 195 psi

Does that sound right? I'm sure that the replacement head wasn't shaved, but I could be wrong. I'm wondering if my compression gauge is all wacky, and I'm worried about the apparently uneven readings.

Any comments?

 

heres what u do... hook up a battery charger to your battery, do the compression test with one spark plug at a time out. you will get the same reading

 

Even if it was shaved that wouldnt account for the uneveness, unless it was shaved on a slope from front to back

I'd run it for awhile then redo the test.

 

Why do you say that? I'm not sure where you're going with it, but no one cylinder is related to any other as far as building compression. And, why the battery charger?

Run the test several times...get another another tester....ie, rent one, borrow one....and see what differences you get. Otherwise, maybe the valve tolerances are off. Check'em when in doubt....if in doubt.

 

I'd pull all the plugs first so its easier to for the starter to turn the motor over.

Ive herd that usuing a charger suposidly(sp) keep the rpm's from one cylinder to the next more consistant but I've never used one or had any problems otherwise.

 

Me neither. I wouldn't think a strong battery would have any probably getting consistency.
