As long as they are both EFI then they have similar trannys. The 85 will have a W-56A and the 87 will have a W-56B, the difference being the part that connects the tranny halves together. On the A it is steel and the B is aluminum.

All 4Runners were EFI except for 1984 (the first year).

Don't be so sure about that! There are a few out there that were carbed. You could get carbs in Canada right up to the early 90's on 22r's and they do have different trannies. As long as both of them are EFI, they will be a direct swap. If you get a trans/case from a carbed truck, both of the shift levers will be in the trans housing with a block off cover on the t-case. The EFI will only have one in the trans and one in the t-case. This is the easiest way to tell if it's already out of the truck just at a glance.
