well it seems that my rear sag in my 94 4Runner is getting worse and worse. at least its seems. i don't know if its just me, but anyways its pretty bad. i was just wondering if anybody has every tried taking OEM springs from a 3rd gen and putting it a 2nd gen. David (madchemist) has some 3rd gens left over from his lift.

also i was wondering if the 3rd gen springs are stiffer because they don't seem to have a problem with the rear sag.

from what i understand the reason 2nd gen sag happens is the spring rate was the same as the lighter rear end pickups, and this problem was solved in the 3rd generation. as far as the springs go i have no idea. i got rid of my old springs from the downey swap, but if someone has thiers laying around get some dimensions to see if theres a major difference.

or maybe someone will know the answer straight out. . .

 

I have a set of stock 3rd gens if you need them. I could take measurements and pics if you want to check them out. I did measure them for another 2nd gen owner and he said they wouldn't fit but I'm not so sure because he didn't actually pull his spring and measure it, he just tried measuring it on the runner.

EDIT: They only have about 5k miles on them

 

The pick-ups actually have a leaf spring set-up vs. the rear coil spring set up on the runner. So, the sagging spring syndrome is caused by a poor spring design on the 4runner alone, which was allegedly updated to curb sag over time.

 

i knew i was probably wrong, that was just a guess. im not very familiar with pickups but that seemed like a possible logical explination. learn new stuff every day here

 

You guys with 2nd gen 4Runners need to talk to Flygtenstein (Adrian) about rear coils. He found that certain years of Landcruisers (FJ-80s, before '96 or 97??? I can't remember) have taller coils that will work for you. Send him a PM and I'm sure he can tell you all of the details.

3rd gen coils are of a slightly different diameter and have different size perches, I think...

But why not go with a proven coil that works?

Many of us 2nd genners go for the Downey HD coils.

It's a proven design, and made to cure your saggin' rear.
Mine have been on since the spring of '99, and not sagged a bit, even with over 300 lb of cargo in the rear.

 

I think the main reason Kevin was interested was that I'd give him the coils for free...

 

so just let him pop them in and see if they work.

 

yeah the main reason i was wondering was because they were free. how much do the Downey HD's cost? would i just be better off waiting till i get my lift in about a year or so?

I had a brain fart and think that Adrian got the used LC coils from Slee Offroad , so you may just give him a call or email and get the specs. I think they were pretty cheap, somewhere less than $100...
