22RE Thermostat Question
Hi all, I'm not a Toyota owner, but know the value of having a great forum like this to get good knowledge from experience!
My friend has a '87 4X4 PU that has been overheating as of late. It has not reached the "redline" on the stock temp gauge, but is getting up there for sure. I did a search here and found that Toyota released a dual-stage thermostat for the 22RE to relieve this type of overheating. I was recommending to my buddy that he just install a lower temp thermostat (160 maybe?) instead of the higher temp stock thermostat, but saw that the dual-stage thermo was available.
Do you guys recommend actually going with the dual-stage thermo for the 22RE, and is that thermostat a lower temperature thermo than the stock unit? Or should we start hunting down a lower temp thermo for his 22RE? I also found the "street" TRD thermos on TRD's site, but couldn't find an application for the 22RE. Any part #'s for the dual-stage as well as a lower temp thermo would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to offer - we'd like to get this Toy runnin' cool for the summertime.... Great board you guys have here as well - it's always good to see people sharing knowledge about the things we love most - our vehicles!
Thanks,
Tim

This info might be helpful. There is a 2-stage thermostat for the 22re pickup. Might I suggest you send a pm to a yotatech member named TOR. He works at a toyota dealer and can give all the part numbers and prices you need. Also you can get in contact with Jay Marks toyota in the vendor advertizing section on the board and they can help you out.
Taken from a previous post on the same subject:
"Is this the 22RE 4 cyl motor? This has happened to several people before. Toyota made a new two stage t-stat for that motor to correct it. Its more expensive than a normal one though. Others, including myself, simply drill a small hole or two in the thermostat to allow hot water to get to the other side and open it up before the needle gets into the red. In my case it fixed it. I drilled 2 holes sized 3/16" opposite each other."
So that is how that guy fixes his temp problem.
Hope that helps
