98 4 runner with factory alarm question..
Hi everyone..,
I have 2 factory remotes for my 1998 4 runner and they both will lock the truck and beep once when I hit the top button, but they will NOT "unlock" it when I hit the bottun to try and get in the truck...It will in fact beep twice and disable the alarm, but none of the locks or the hatch will unlock...
I thought that was strange because the rest of the alarm system other than this seems to function correctly..Is this how its supposed to work, or is there something I should try to correct this?? I would like to get it working properly, so any help would be great!! thanks-

On my '98 I have two buttons. Only one does anything though, and the larger one both locks and unlocks the doors. One beep is locked and two beeps everything unlocks.
Anyone know what the other button is for?

I installed the toyota RS3200 plus alarm in my 2002, initially I only had keyless entry. With the keyless entry/alarm, the lock button locks everything with a single beep. The unlock button unlocks the driver side door with one press (making two beeps). A sequential press is required (with two more beeps) to unlock all doors including the rear hatch.
This may just be unique to the later 3rd gen 4runners.

You're 98 will be the RS3000, like I have. The bottom button is for another Yota vehicle you might own that has the same alarm system. The RS3200
as skjos says has a different remote and button arrangement.
So the problem you are having is not the fobs but the main brain unit(under drivers seat) or maybe the wiring to the "locking" circuit.
If i only move my car out the driveway and don't hit the magic mph figure that automatically locks the doors whilst driving, it seems to confuse the alarm system when i stop and use the fob to lock. Another issue i have is if open the passenger side door the alarm will automatically realarm itself. This doesn't happen for the drivers door.
These alarms are ok, but reading online some aftermarket ones are much more stable, offer better features, and can actually deter tiefs (bahamian for thief!)
The users and installation manuals for the RS3000 are online somewhere. Search for them and maybe check the wiring on your rig.

yup, you can program both buttons on the remote for the same vehicle if you like. you can also deactivate that stupid auto lock feature. so you don't have to worry about your unit getting confused. i would reset the unit as well and reprogram the remote. all this takes about 1 minute.
