A TIG would be your best bet, but most of us can't afford one or feel there is no real need for one with most welding projects. With that said, a MIG is your next bet. What I tend to do when welding sheet metal it to make tack welds about 6-8" from eachother. Work all the way around the panel. Then start over with tack weld half way between the first ones. Repeat this process until the panel is completely welded. Make sure that the welding area stays cool. This will keep the part from warping and give you great results.

Mig will work but Tig will be the stongest. If you don't put a peace of slightly thicker metal behind the two peaces that you are trying to weld together than it will be hidden on the inside of your bed and you should be able to weld it up without too much of a problem.

That would work if you are going to use the arc welder, but not needed with quality welds made with a mig or tig.

As I said, tig is best, but not really an option for most of us.

killa b- to answer your question, a mig welder is a wire feed welder that uses either flux core wire or solid core wire with a gas shield.

Dan was exactly right. And I agree, however Tig is only gonna work best if he can properly weld it which isnt very successfull being new to welding. Very hard to master. Anyways yes try to get a mig welder and if at all possible a new machine which can do pulse welding. Thats gonna be your best bet for the thin stuff. Even without the pulse. And times 2 with the .023 wire.
