Bed Shell/Cap compatability between generations

Camper shell. Or bed topper. This has maybe been asked and talked about before, but I couldn't find it.

I have an 86 xtra cab and am looking at a shell that is on a 1990 xtracab on craigslist. It looks like a great fit on the truck and I'm wondering how it will transfer to my truck. I'm wondering about compatibility between the 89-95 generation and the 84-88 generation. Is the forward slant on the xtra cabs the same? My bed dimensions (outside rail to rail) are 59"x76". Is the 89-95 generation the same?

you might run into some clearance issues if the canopy is angled slightly at the cab end.
i had one off a 3rd gen truck on my 84 X-Cab, it was fine.

I think they are the same. I have an 87 extra cab and I also bought a used cap. From what I remember it was a 92 extra cab. It fit perfect but this was twenty years ago.
Regular cab's and extra cab's do have different angles! Don't know why.

Nice meeting you tonight. Good luck with the cap.

Yes same to you. Got back up to Maine and the shell is working out great. Fits likes a glove. I ended up ripping out all the carpeting on the inside and plan to put a coat of paint in there. Also ordered a few replacement t handles with keys for the back door.

It's a glasstite topper. And I may as well answer my own thread here for others who might try to look this up in the future. The answer is a definitive YES. The truck beds and forward angle of the rear of these xtracab truck cabs are identical between 84-88 and 89-95 pickups. A shell from any of these years are completely interchangeable.
