Unusual Sounds, Different Feel to Clutching. Truck Mileage at this time: approx 22787

Title: Unusual Sounds, Different Feel to Clutching. Truck Mileage at this time: approx 22787
Thanks Terry!

BTW, guys, I've been hearing unusual sounds recently...

At idle, I hear louder sound from engine... Could be exhaust leak? Here a video:

Also at idle AND AT NEUTRAL, the sound changes tone when I step on the clutch. Could it be resonance of clutch system, or clutch going bad?
Video is here:

Clutch Feel and Transmission Sound:
When I first got the truck in 2012, 5th gear sounded different than other gears. While lower gears had a solid sound, 5th gear sounds higher pitched. Hard to explain, but will try to post video later. Instead of a rumble, it sounds more like WROAAAAH. If you're familiar with sound of the Wah-wah guitar effects pedal, 1st to 4th gear sounded like the "WOOOOOH", while 5th sounds like the "WAAAAH". Now all gears, except for the 4th sond like the "WRAAAH". Fourth gear still sounds solid.

I do not have issues shifting nor accelerating, and am able to go 80MPH and pass trucks on flat portions of I-40.

When I slowly release clutch in first gear or in reverse, it seems to shudder or pulse. However, as I give it more gas, the shudder/pulsing goes away. (I recently tried 86 Octane in New Mexico - I'll observe after I refill tank).

Anything you think I could check for myself? Would appreciate feedback.
Will be driving to Dallas/Plano area tomorrow, then To Houston/Cypress area Friday and staying there until the new year. Again, recommendations for mechs/shops int those area would be appreciated.

By your explanation on the transmission, I would say you have one with the 5th gear whine. Getting a transmission without the 5th gear whine is a 50/50 shot when getting a used transmission. Not saying you need to get another transmission, just saying some have the whine and others do not have the whine. It still has lots of miles left in it so no worries on the transmission if it is just the whine noise.

I can not really tell what the noise is from the video if it is from the transmission or the exhaust. Since you are stepping on the pedal and the shudder or pulse is most likely in the transmission. One thing I do know that can cause a shudder is if the transmission shaft front bearing has a little play in it. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f199...l#post52177328

The whine and loose shaft is nothing to be concerned with on your trip if these two things are your problem and wont cause you to be broken down somewhere and will get you there and back. If that is your problem, I would not be concerned with it at this time.

If you want to see if it is an exhaust leak, pull your air tube off of the front of the Throttle Body, open the Throttle Body and put a table spoon of transmission fluid in the Plenum. Put it back together and start the truck. With it idling, (it will start to smoke until the transmission fluid is burnt up,) and using a rag, block of the end of the tail pipe, the smoke will come out of any leaks. You cant keep it blocked so long that it kills the engine but enough to find any leaks. If the leak is from the transmission to the rear, it will be easy to see. If it is leaking at the manifold down to the fire wall, that is where you will need another person to help you out.

When was the last time the clutch was changed? I listened to when you were pressing and releasing the clutch pedal and heard the noise you were talking about.

Thanks a lot, Terry. Comforting to know about the 5th gear whine, because it had always had that but no issues with driving.
When was the last time the clutch was changed?
Clutch was replaced at the same time as my engine rebuild about 2 years ago.
I think I understand about the sound change when stepping and releasing the clutch; Pls educate me... When clutch pedal is released the clutch actually engage the flywheel. Then when pressed, it dis engages from the flywheel.
I made it from Lubbock to Plano, TX today. No issues except for that sound like the engine is straining in first to third gear although acceleration an speed are OK (was going 8-MPH at times and passing other vehicles. I'm now with and am with my cousin who knows vintage trucks (remember that pic where we were pushing an old truck in O'Fallon, MO?) and I let him drive it. He also says the drivetrain has power but THAT sound. Then when we got back to his neighborhood, the sound went away. We now suspect something between the engine and the transmission. He knows a good transmission place here around Dallas that does classics, so we'll take the truck there tomorrow. Wanna be sure and/or get it fixed before I proceed to my brother's place in Cypress/Houston because that's around a 4 hour drive.

Great times on Route 66!

Sounds like input shaft bearing is going bad. Mine had the same noise and it slowly got louder in every gear but 4th bec it wasn't rotating the bearing (direct drive). Bought a used W56 locally and did a minor rebuild on it before swapping it out. Gaskets and input bearing. I wish I thought to swap out the output bearing too bec it makes a quiet noise at highway speed.

If it gets difficult to put into gear or if it wont stay in 4th gear then its time to rebuild or swap it out. Over the course of 3 months, mine got to the point where I had no 4th gear because of the bearing play (4th gear is right behind the input bearing). Slowly gathered parts when the noise began, rear main seal, pilot and throw-out bearings, clutch and flywheel, clutch alignment tool, 6qts Redline MT-90 for (tcase and trans), gasket kit, input bearing, trans mount, used W56-B trans, rented a bearing puller that I had to modify to pull the input bearing and cut a piece of pipe to hammer on the new one. Also did the clutch master and slave too. I wish I had the funds to do a twin stick at the time but I was on a budget. I recommend doing the output bearing too...

Start searching for used ones or gather the funds for a rebuilt unit so you are ready to swap it out when it gives up the ghost.

Here is an album I made of transmission stuff:

I have taken that bearing off and like Spacemonkee says that getting the bearing back on can take some pressure. When I do install one, what I plan on doing is to sit the transmission out in the cold weather and put the bearing in the oven and see if that helps to get it on easier. His photo album shows what is needed to replace that bearing.

It wasn't too bad for me. I just took the new bearing over to the hardware store and got about a 1.5ft of metal pipe that matched the diameter of the inner race and hammered it on. Worked surprisingly well.

Thanks a lot, Terry and Spacemonkee23.

Truck Mileage at this time: approx 227872
I made it from Lubbock to Plano, TX with that sound, and let my cousin drive it to see how it feels. He also said shifting as solid and not slipping, but the truck sounded like a semi straining to go uphill on 1st to 3rd gear. 4th still sounded and felt sweet. 5th still the usual whine but not any worse. When trucks stopped in neutral, we would occasionally hear a rhythmic clunking noise. I checked my last tankful and saw 19mpg so, yes, I could have probably still driven her another 4 hours to Cypress/Houston but my cousin's friend recommended a manual transmission specialist so I simply left truck there. Got myself a loaner

SOUNDTRACK FOR DRIVE TO CYPRESS/HOUSTON:

Will pick her up next week. Looking forward to driving a smoother, quieter truck back to So Cal
Merry Christmas, everybody! And thanks always for the help!

UPDATE ON TRANSMISSION WORK:
Hi guys!

Cookson's Transmission I south Dallas did the transmission rebuild. I'll take care of the clutch fork when it's time to replace the clutch.

I picked up the truck today and I see indications that the job was done well.
  • Shifting is pretty smooth I think, except a little harder (tighter?) to get into first and second gears. I need someone who drives another first-gen to compare.
  • All the symptoms I described earlier all gone.
  • Tranny case very clean.
  • The back-up switch wiring is secured well. Note the flexible conduit that I used for protection earlier.
  • AND... (drum-roll)... the 5th gear whine, that had always been there since I got the truck in 2012, is gone
.

So far so good. Ready to drive back to So Cal via southern corridor (I-20, I-10, to Phoenix, to Joshua Tree camping) tomorrow AM.

Really appreciate all your inputs.
Happy New Year!

Congrats on getting rid of the 5th gear whine. I will not lug the motor while in 5th gear and also will not pull a trailer using 5th gear. I do everything to try and keep the load off of 5th just to avoid the whine. I have replaced transmissions just for that reason.

I think a truck runs so much better after a long trip. Just seems that everything gets a good work out and it helps get the tires nice and round when they have been on a long run. Also gives you confidence that the truck can go on a long haul and get you there and back. Plus the memories of just taking it to some place you dont normally get to go. Sounds like a good trip for you other then the transmission rebuild.

Ray, what is a ballpark number on the cost for your rebuild? What all was done? I ask because I may be in your shoes.

Complete rebuild, gears good, just replacement worn out parts I think.

Grinding sound in lower gear, rhythmic clunk in neutral, 5th gear whine, and $1385 all gone.

Just getting caught up- sorry about the transmission trouble. I really enjoy the pics of the west, makes me miss home ("means Nevada").
Once upon a time (okay, about ten years ago) I proposed to my wife at a Loves Truck Stop... We drove my '86 Toyota van across the country several times together; really love a road trip. Sold that van with over 350k miles on it.
Looking forward to the return trip photos!

Thanks but no problem; happy to drive a more quiet truck... but when I picked her up, I started missing the 6th gear of my loaner Mini-Cooper - LOL!
Awesome story about Love's

Arrived at White Sands National Monument trailhead to back country trail/campsites as sun was setting... Hike was easy over rolling dunes, except that it was hard to see the trail markers in fading light. Coordinates to campsite would have been great.

Always! Thank you for sharing, but now I am home sick

We once had a roll of film developed with pictures from white sands, the lab techs kept adjusting the color to make the sand look "right".

LOL! That's the advantage of today's digital photography, especially using RAW format; easy pull-down menu to select white balance.

However, pics above were taken without processing with my Samsung Galaxy S5, no tweaking.

Suspect Windshield Leak Really Gutter Leak

Windshield Leak - NOT
YEAH! I think I found where the leak is from!

I taped the surroundings of windshield like below, but when it rained, it still dripped at same location.

I remember that the dripping was worst when I brake or turn a corner, so the idea of water pooling somewhere made sense...
I probed right under the roof sheet metal where water could accumulate around that corner with a tissue paper and found moisture... where the inner sheet metal forms a trough (green arrow) against the outer roof sheet metal...

That strongly points to this worn out seal on the gutter here...
Name: 20170110_143456-1_zpsliw8iahc.jpg
Views: 1461
Size: 442.0 KB

To verify, I covered the whole roof, including the gutters with tarp before it rained again...

RESULT: NO LEAK!

WHAT'S NEXT:

I already have Dynatron 550 seam sealer whose recommended application is either bare metal or primed metal, so I think my next steps would be:
1) Thoroughly steel brush everything I can reach on the gutter,
2) Apply the Dynatron 550 by hand, squeezing it well into the crack, let dry,
3) Prime
4) Paint

Your thoughts please, guys?
I wonder why it's not dripping from the door frame pinch-weld which is directly below the gutter.
Do you think the Dupli-Color / store bought spray can primer and paint would be good enough?

Your plan sounds pretty good to me. One question, you say apply the seam sealer by hand. Do you mean dab it in with your finger? The little tip on the tube is a lot smaller than your finger and would be better at squeezing the sealer into corners and cracks. The front section of the rain gutter (on the A-pillar) is a lot narrower but do your best to seal that up too. Leaks in that area lead to the fairly common A-pillar rust in the door jamb area. Duplicolor paint will work perfectly fine. I wouldn't count on it for perfect match but as far as adhesion and protection, it'll be just fine. Do your best to minimize paint removal where it shows. Then be careful to only apply it where necessary so you can't see the mis-match.
