Ok, was just out working on the yota again and took a look at the maf. It is pretty crusty and when I move the metal flap inside the maf, it does not move smoothly. It is very hard to move and feels like it ratchets. Is it suppose to move smoothly and just feel spring loaded or is this how it is suppose to feel and be difficult to move?

 

It should just be like pulling a spring then snap back. If not you got problems.

 

It's an AFM, not a MAF.

Guess I have problems then, because it opens very hard and clicks as it opens. So now I need a fuel pump and AFM...great.

 

Let me know if anyone has a working AFM for a 89 yota pickup with 22re they want to sell for cheap...I went from a free truck to $1200 plus into it...pretty much broke and it still isn't running.

 

Isn't there some sort of fuel cut in the afm? It could be that the afm is the reason for both your problems. IIRC you can get a larger AFM for that engine that is plug and play from a supra, you'll have to do some research for yourself though.

 

The supra AFM wont work, totaly different resistances and a CFM beyond what the 22re ECU can handle, You would also need to use the ECU for that particulare AFM since it was designed for a 6Cyl and comparible CFM.

First off, what engine and year do you have?, Knowing this helps alot.

"ALL" 3vze's use 22250 65010

22re 83-85 22250 35010 (celica)
83-88 22250 35020 (truck)
83-88 22250 35040 (22rert truck)
89-92 22250 35050 (truck)

All the 22re afm should be compatible to eachother with the 22rert one being the only one tuned different but I doubt that.
The reason for the different numbers is to help match with ECU's and thats because the difference in inpedence in the injectors and thats a different subject.

 

I'll have an AFM for you in a few weeks.
If the AFM is dead, don't count your fuel pump out yet...

Definently don't assume your pump, The jumper wire trick will make the pump run while the key in in "on" position, even if AFM is not signaling the pump to run. This is the link:

That's a nice write up. But it didn't mention that you can remove the bottom plate to clean the vane and the air channel. They tend to get a little corrosion inside them over the years which can cause the vane to drag. Plus, with a little effort, you can replace the bearings that the vane pivots on (they tend to rust) and make it move like new again.

 

Thanks, that's good to know. I assumed it was removable but three of the screws buggered up when I tried to remove them, so I couldn't get it off. Be very careful with the screws on the bottom.. they're like made of lead or something.

 

Guys, I have an '89 4runner with the 22RE engine that needs a new mass air flow sensor.
The original part says 22250-35020, but does anyone here know if I can just substitute it with part # 22250-35040 without a problem?

This dealer https://parts.lakelandtoyota.com/pro...rm=22250-35020 says the part you have is for use w/o a turbo, 22250-35040 is for use with a turbo.

Other than the fact that Toyota saw fit to make two different parts, I don't know if they are interchangeable.
