ham radio installaton?
#1
I want to install a Yaesu FT-8800R in my 2006 4 runner. Where can I put it?
I thought about getting another "door" for the storage compartment under the heater controlls and cutting/and installing the removable face in that place.
Has anyone thought about that or has already installed one. Where is a good place to run the antenna and power wires throught the firewall?

In my Trooper I had a storage tray under the stereo. I made a cover for it, mounted the control head of my Icom 706 on that, and the radio under the drivers seat. Various antennas are on the roof and rear door.

The 8800 looks like a great radio - let me know how you like the cross-band repeater feature. I have an IC-V8000 VHF and just bought a Yaesu FT-857 for HF use. I have the V8000 mounted in the bottom part of the Dual-DIN opening. The 857 remote face is mounted on a Ram mount that keeps it out of the way of the other electronics I have but still keeps it accessible for easy-use. The head unit is mounted under my driver's seat. Have you considered getting the YSK-8900 Separation Kit? It does open up a lot of different mounting options.
Also, www.eham.net, www.k2bj.com and www.k0bg.com are 3 great resources for mobile ham radio and installation tips. Since I'm not familiar wtih the 2006 4Runner, I really can't give any advice on routing the antenna cable other than be careful about kinks and running the coax along-side electrical wires. Good luck and be sure to post pics

I know about avoiding electrical wires b/c of interference, but what about running the coax along the same route as my CB coax, would they interfere with each other at all?

Should be no issue unless the coax is damaged, and if thats the case you have more issues.
Ever seen how coaxes are attached to a tower. Side by side sometimes in bundles for the smaller lines.
