GPS mounting options

I have a GARMIN streetpilotIII that I receved 4 christmas ant am trying to figure out the best way to mount it, the bean bag style mount that came with it works good on the street, better that i would think by looking at it, but i would like to have it mounted so that i can actuly use it when i go weeling.

I was just wondering if any of you guys have a gps thats hard mounted, and if so how you did it, any pics would be great too.

I have the mounting piece that the GPS clips in too, i'm going to mount it to the dash i think, alot of people have been telling me that double sided tape or velcro would work, but none of them have drivin with me, letys just say that anything in my truck needs to be straped down tight.

Id like to se someone that has one mounted and that wheels hard so i know that it works, any input would be great, thanks

driftaco,

look into garmin's windshield mounts (i have one---they are good quality) or look into ram mounts . i think the url is ram-mount.com or something like that. imho, thye have the best products but the absolute WORST, WORST!!! website. good luck trying to figure out what you need i'd just as soon as call them instead of tyring to figure it out.

do a search too on "gps mounts", "gps mounting", etc, etc.

I use a Ram mount. They have good stuff, but like Bob says, their website sucks. It is really hard to navigate.

I'm using the Garmin dash mount with industrial strength doublesided tape. It's been on quite a few wheeling trips and never budged when by all means it should have. Sometimes I loose my patience and get a little skinny pedal happy on obstacles.

Yep, I just use the Garmin dash mount. I used the temporary tape pad that comes with it and it has worked fine for almost 2 years now. I have been on a number of wheeling trips with it no prob. I had a GPS V and now have a 276C which is bigger.

Go here
http://www.gpsnow.com/gmspiiiacc.htm
and look for
GARMIN Dashboard Swivel Mount (Base Only)

and then you can use the permanent adhesive pad or the temp one.

I found even the permanent adhesive lasted about 1 week longer than the temporary stuff for me (SP-III). With the vibration of off-road use and the heat of the sun on the dash, I had the GPS falling off aftera few trips. I made a really nice mount for mine:

Easy to see and reach, cables up and out of the way. I plan to hardwire a power plug up there with an external speaker and also add a serial/USB port to access the GPS from my laptop.

I did something similar for the same unit in my VW's center console:

Garmin GPS V and RAM mount. Since taking this pic, I have cleaned up the ant. and power/data connections.

So if you hardwire the GPS to a power source in the car, or are just suing the adapter, is there a way to make it turn on automatically with accesory power? The one thing I dont like is having to rememeber to turn it on. Sometimes I forget and when I'm using the gas mileage tool it blows the results.

matt,

check out my writeup on how i hardwired my valentine radar detector to a switched source:
http://www.4runners.org/articles/valentine/

this will give you an idea of what and how to do it.

look and find the wiring database for your vehicle at www.the12volt.com to find which wire to tap.

the other alternative is to wire it up to a full-time power source. i liked corey's solution of adding a distributed 12v fuse box inside the engine bay. look in the tech section for that writeup.
