Post CB Install Help

Just nabbed a cobra 19 ultra III at wally world, and I wanted to install it in my 96 T100.

I dont wanna run it from the battery, I want to tap the cig lighter for power..I dont ever use it so I think its good and less complicate and I dont have to worry about my wires melting from the heat of the engine.

Now bear with me, but I take a voltmeter (multimeter, whatever) and check the wires till I find one thats hot and tap that. Then of course I ground the black to the sheetmetal that is all behind my dash..

I mean I can wire stuff, but usually houses are different than cars...

Thanks

You could save yourself some time and trouble and tap the hot wire from the fuse block under the dash (hot when ignition is on, so you don't leave your radio on overnight) and then ground to bolt under dash.

If you don't want to do that, what my friend did is take apart the center console, remove cigarette lighter plug housing, and tap power and ground wires from that. Then reinstall plug housing, and you get a factory-looking clean install. He doesn't smoke, so no need to worry about overloading the circuit by actually using the plug as a lighter.

Well, I think the hot from the fuse block could work. Which wire is that even, I would need a wiring diagram right?

So I could overload the cigg lighter tho, say if I plugged in my phone charger?

Or, just get a cigarette lighter adapter, cut and splice the wires, and plug your CB into the cigarette lighter when you need it (like i do).

My CB is tapped into both the hot and ground wires running from my cig lighter. I use the lighter to charge my little jumper pack/air pump. Hasn't blown a fuse yet.

Well, I finally gave up trying to fab up a mount so I didnt have to remove anything. The T100 lower console area just doesnt work right b/c of where the radio, ashtray and cigg lighter are. So I ripped out the ashtray since I dont use it except to hold junk and with some minor trimming my cb will fit..

Here's what I have, nothing to install because everything is in the hand held unit:

I have magnetic antenna. I only use mine on trips. It works nicely, range is around 2-3 miles.

You can also use it as a walkie-talkie (disconnect bottom part, add battery pack, antenna screws in), in case you get stuck in a valley or something and need to hike out on foot.

Update:

I installed it in the ashtray as planned, fit pretty well too. I originally just plugged the wire into the cig lighter plug for power but got noise whenever i had the squelch turned up. Also my lighter didnt work and my phone charger is handy.

So I took a simple plug and made it fit my cig lighter, then spliced two wires to it and made one with aplug for the lighter and the other for the CB. No electronic noise and it works great..now I need to run an antenna.
