quick question, if a sub blows, or whatever its called, can it still play low end frequencies?

the reason i ask is because today, when i was driving, it started sounding like something was up against my sub, causing this super weird sound. turns out nothing was, and,i have no idea whats wrong.

 

yes a sub can still work when blown at low power and sound like its broken when more power is applied

 

Also if you push on it alittle bit and then it starts playing that means you could have blown voice coil. It will keep cutting on and off.

 

A perfect reason to go out and buy this.

 

today, upon further inspection, i think that it is not blown. however, i think the rubber stuff(sorry, im not an audio guru) that allows the speaker to go in and out came off the speaker in an area. that probably made no sense...

plus, i cant figure out how an apline type r on a crappy amp can blow when its been running in the same set up for a year now, without any adjustments,

 

That would be the surround.
Push the speaker in and listen to see if you hear a grinding noise.

Crappy amps with good speakers = not good.
Distortion kills speakers.
When you under power a speaker, you turn it up more, and thats where the speaker killing distortion begins.

Just for ha-has. A long time ago I had a 5 watt RMS Sony boombox speaker hooked up to 350 watts of power. It didn't mind the power, but once I really cranked it, the voice coil shot through the dust cap and caught fire.
Not the only speaker I did that too, but it was the lowest power rating.
Overpowering a speaker won't hurt nearly as much as an underpowered & distorted speaker.

 

when i say crappy amp, i dont really mean crappy. it gets the job done. but, there is better. its a sony 1502sx.

 

I take it thats 150x2 RMS @ 4 ohms.

Whats the power rating on the Alpine?

Do you turn the volume on the radio up high?

EDIT: As I am not a big Alpine fan, I see the type R's are offered in single and dual voice coils. Which do you have?

 

Your amp was probably clipping...

dual voice coils from what i can remember. the amp is bridged, if that makes a difference.

and, i dont turn it up that loud.

 

Age, a puncture. Usually that really isn't an issue with better speakers, but it can cause the voice coil to rub along the motor structure as movement would no longer be linear.
Ummmmm....... I have garbage speakers that I like to beat on every once in a while. Old MTX's. One has 3" of surround no longer attached and one has a Phillips head screwdriver puncture in it. Still plays loud.

 

i had a audiobahn 10" flame sub 900 RMS and blew it some how. It would hit the bass nots but it sounded like something was rattling inside the cone. I guess i was underpowering the sub only pushin 600 watts to it

i belive i will get that so called sub you talk about, but im holding you reliable for any vehicle modifications i may incur after installing it, including, but not limited to, a new engine, suspension, sas, lockers, (preferably selectable),interior, etc etc etc.

but if you get it first, and show me how it sounds, and how your runner actually runs with it, then i may choose to remove all liability on your part.
