I want a tire carrier..... help

since i got my bentup bumper, i have no place to put my spare, especially when i get a 35 for a spare. i've tried to get an OEM one from Japan, but my buddy over there says that the shipping alone would kill me (rack and rear tailgate) so i've thought about doing what Pat Murphey did with the pathfinder rack.... Do i mod my bumper, or should i attach it to the runner itself? I'd like to figure this out but my ideas suck right now, and it seems like my imagination has hit the wall.....

little help.....

thanks

why do you need a rear tailgate? all you need is the swing-out tire carrier that mounts to the body above and below the passenger side tail light and the hardware to install it. you can then put your plate on the wheel or get a bracket and mount it somewhere else. you don't have to get a new rear hatch. if you have a source for the swing-out carrier, i might be interested depending on price...

when i talk about a new tailgate, i'm talking about the JDM tire carrier that is available, but never came over to the US it latches on the back of the tailgate, if you look at Satochis's Hilux his tailgate is slightly different, than ours. http://www.4runners.org/articles/satoshi/miuras.html

the pathfinder carrier mod, is more or less what pmurf1 did years ago, and just adapt it to my 4runner http://pmurf1.homestead.com/

actually, if you look close, it's the same gate w/ just a filler panel over what is now our license plate area. also, it has the latch flush-mounted into the gate, which could be done to your US spec gate w/o getting one from japan.

true, it is the same basic tailgate, but considering all the fab work, and getting the specific latch and everything it seems like the extra shipping of the tailgate, (slow boat) added to the tire carrier, it would just even out in the long run

so, if i locate a source for some salvage carriers w/ all the hardware and the latch that you'll have to fab either onto the bumper or into the rear hatch, how many are game besides me? two?

i may have found a place to get them from...

I'm game, as always depends on the cost. But count me in. If we could get 2 or 3 of these, maybe shipping would be cheaper.

That second site comes up, but none of his links work.
