half doors and legality???
Ok so I made a typical set of half doors Friday and on Sunday I got pulled over for them and was given a warning and was also told to come in on Tuesday to check legality, as the officer was not sure. So I went in today and I am told that altering the doors in any way illegal. Here is the info. This is the first I have heard about them not being legal
RCW 46.37.517
Body and body hardware.
(1) The body, fenders, and bumpers shall be maintained without protrusions which could be hazardous to pedestrians. In addition, the bumpers shall be so attached and maintained so as to not protrude beyond the original bumper line.
(2) The hood, hood latches, hood fastenings, doors, and door latches shall be maintained in a condition sufficient to ensure proper working equal to that at the time of original vehicle manufacture.
[1977 ex.s. c 355 § 44.]
what do you guys think is their room for interpitation??

Guess I would have to agree with the state, yet at the same time, have to say there is space for interpretation....
more specifically...
Now, if you throw something in there that doesn't provide for a 2 1/2 MPH side impact (if I remember correctly), you violated the law. If you were to use the majority of the door that maintains the side impact....Then you would be legal.
Now to prove the side impact protection remains in place is another story. Not to mention the door is also a restaining device to keep you inside the vehicle.
So which way to go here?

we arent talking about no doors, the situation was this guy got in trouble for running half doors.......
however according to what his state says about the doors, a jeep would therefore not be street legal without doors, as it had doors factory equipped

According to that logic, hood scoops are illegal if they didn't originally come on your vehicle as it's altering the hood.
Ask them why Jeeps can run without doors completely, and you can't run with half doors. Sounds like someone is behind on their quota.

ok i just mesured the doors the inside reveal is 5.5" and the outside is 8". that is what is left of the door on the bottom. i cut it at the body line at the botom the handel down to the lower bodyline on the door. along there for 2' (24") then up to where the A piller meats the fender. i will try to get some pics or barow some other that look like it. the other isue is i dont want to make the local cops mad as there is only 7 or 8 total and there is never any state as i live on an island.
