As I was driving to work this morning (12miles) thinking of the impending gas price crisis/issue/whatever you want to call it.
I started blaming environmentalists in my head...you know, the ones who block trails and pipelines and drilling because it MAY effect the lives of boll-weevils or horse-flys.
Then I thought: "I have never seen a Prius/Volt out at the trail-heads with big bags full of trash...it's always groups of trucks/Jeeps with big, beefy tires with names like "TERRA-GRAPPLER and MUD TERRAIN". (grrrr) It's happy kids with gloves that don't fit and trash bags they can barely carry. It's people who USE the land taking CARE of the land.
Rambling thoughts here...just wanted to really give props to AssYriaNrocKer and mention (since gas is SO GODAWFUL expensive this weekend and I won't be able to go to Show Low as planned for some trail wheeling) that we will be taking AssYriaNrocKers lead and heading to Table Mesa with some trash bags to do our part for OUR environment. Feel free to join up. We'll be on CB16, heading up around 11am Sunday.

I've been looking for one of these locally for my jerry can.
Pretty sweet and no drinking gas!

Got the new coilovers installed on the SC'd truck...we pegged 'em fully up and it rides like CRAP! Dropping 'em down 1/2" when we do the alignment. Hopefully that's enough to let the Billsteins do their job. Truck was bouncing like a low-rider on the freeway going home. Anyone know how long the Eibachs generally take to "settle"?

We used the stock top-hat from the Anthracite truck because the Eibachs were taller than the old coilovers. Wondering if I should put a coil-spacer in to give it the lift but still let the shocks cycle correctly?

Dropped the coils 6 turns. Rides like a dream!

Don't know. I keep checking back every now and again and it seems as though people are just busy with other things. I know I have; replacing the clutch, taxes, school (except this week/ spring break), work., etc.. I'd be really interested in a side by side shot of both your 4Runners for a comparison...probably best in yer build thread though. I am subscribed, so it'll send an update email.

I will be making another run through WoodPecker. The boss agreed it was about time to. We were suppose to go last weekend but life got in the way, so we rescheduled it to this next weekend.

Sorry to hear about her ankle...Best wishes for a speedy recovery. I know what it's like to have to wait hand and foot on some one in recovery. Not long ago, Sheryl had spine surgery. That really threw a wrench in daily life. Thankfully she's fully recovered and all that remains is a scar...and the memory. Here's to a fast, full recovery

Wow. That sucks. Been there; done that.

The good news is that she will likely make a full recovery like I did if she listens to the doc. Unlike what most people do and leave the parts in permanently, a couple years later after it was healed I had the hardware removed (elective surgery) and it felt soooo much better.

Heh - maybe we can discuss over a beer after a trail run one of these days

Best wishes.

Gun Show??

Has anyone gone to the gun show this weekend? I'm heading out there today around 10:00 a.m. to "look". Been out shooting with other people's gun's and decided I "need" to finally get one for my-self. Been looking at the .40 caliber's and have convinced the wife we need to go to check some out and see how they feel in both our hands. Also, been trying to figure out how to build an AR-15 (5.56) slowly and starting with a stripped upper/ lower from Core15. Any one have any suggestions? I know a few of us own and shoot here.

The best way to buy a gun is not the cheapest way, but still the best. Buy a gun that you shoot well. Shoot friends' guns or rent a few different versions at a range.

I have owned a Glock model 23 (.40), a Springfield XD (.40), and now own a Steyr M40-A1 (.40). Bottom line is that I sold the first two fine weapons because I simply shot the Steyr better...so much so that I bought a matching 9mm.

Shoot first. Buy second.

In my lifetime, I have bought three guns at gun shows, but overall I'm not a fan. Sometimes there are good deal, and sometimes not. If you don't know, take someone who does or get a good idea of the new price by comparing online.

Good luck.

Edit - just a thought but Cabela's is normally expensive. That said their sale prices often cannot be beaten. On your end of town, I have bought guns at Pistol Parlour and Bear Mountain Sports (very good prices and website) and on my side the Glock expert is Lone Wolf in Glendale.

Edit #2 - If I were considering a Glock, I would buy it from Lone Wolf. He's in the middle of the Fast & Furious debacle and is somewhat attached to the whistle blowing and could use our support given the upcoming legal fees he's going to face.

Thanks for the heads up and words of wisdom. The trip to the gun show was to get as many guns in her hands as possible. If this is gonna be a weapon for home defense, she needs to be able to shoot it as well. That said, the 1911 (any) that she held, were just to heavy for her. And that's with out the magazine. She seemed to favor the sub-compacts in the .40 chambering but seemed alright with the full size 9mm. Part of me (us) leaning towards the XDM .40 are the two safety's incorporated into the handle and trigger. There will be a "lock box" that it will be kept in with immediate access if necessary. But the more difficult it is for our 3-year old to get to, the better. I've found a couple of shooting ranges out here on the east side and plan to call ahead and check inventory on rentalable items so as to not duplicate an experience unless necessary for a final decision. I have shot many weapons in my life but I still consider my-self an extreme novice. Having had this experience with other people's weapons, I prefer the .40 for it's knock down power. And if it's for home defense, knock down is what I'm after. Money is a factor but not the final one. I have thought about building my own AR15 but am torn. Anyone have any suggestions?? PM me please.

I'ts been recommended to get an AK47, VZ58, or something in the 7.62 flavor. Here, cost and reliability will be a huge factor but it will have to perform duty as a possible hunting rifle as well. I know the AR15 can be had in 1:7,1:8 and 1:9 with varying length's in barrels and quality...this is to be considered a "Dooms day" item if it ever comes to pass and I'd like to have something that can reach out and touch some one but still be effective in close quarter situations. Need lot's of advise on this last one...as I know there are a few "retired" military personell on this board with real world experience...AHEM!!! (clearing throat) Please chime in with a PM if you would please. In the mean time, I will continue to perform forum searches, read reviews, ask ton's of questions and pick anyone's brain for more information.

I would not consider an AK or an AR-15 for home defense at all. You want stopping power indeed but not bullet velocity. An errant rifle round will cut through the stucco of your house, your neighbor's house and maybe his neighbor's house. Seriously.

If you are looking for home defense, stick with a handgun or a pump action 12 ga. If its go time I have a pump 12 ga. with the tube spacer removed and 3 rounds of 00 buck shot followed by 2 slugs in case they get down the street

You do NOT necessarily need to buy shells for the 12 ga. (this is a great thing for kids - no rounds...no accidents) Consider this - I like Mossberg for home defense because they have a very loud pump action and are cheap. Rack the pump loudly and any normal thug will get out fast. If they do not get out, they are pro's and you need to get out fast!

absolutely ....

Its multilevel platform ....home defense is the best....useless your trained and used to defense under stress its a point and squeeze ....gets a round on target with little efferent...then to the compilation...its great for small game...bird...water foul...and with practice ...even mid size game...think deer slugs....but its a multi tasker....and inexpensive to practice with....and FUN! trap and skeet is so much fun........its the first weapon I advise people to purchase ....then....the 10/.22. Second only to a shot gun.....even more fun...and again...inexpensive to practice .......the hand gun is fine...but again...to easy to get turned on the owner....unless your very used to operating...it can be clumsy ....the large bore rifles are nice...but unless your really going to be an avid shooter...its just a waist....the long shot takes time and practice practice practice.....I do dime drill several times a week just to keep my trigger squeeze down....its like a golf swing...a bad squeeze or worse a yank...your shot goes way off....I could write hours on this....but just good basics are really all a novice home defensive fire arm owner needs....and please....this should go with out saying...1..ALWAYS ACT AS. IF. THE WEAPON IS LOADED ...ALWAYS ..
