thanks, hopefully I get back out on the trails soon. sadly, she's sprung a leak. still have to crawl under it and figure out if it's oil or trans fluid.
the trans probably needs a good servicing as well as a new pan gasket anyways so regardless, I'll be doing both next weekend.

2. Where is a good bone yard in Phoenix to get interior parts for my first gen 4Runner? GRAY INTERIOR. I am looking for the rear carpet, radio surround bezel, and the rear carpet trim piece that holds down the carpet at the tailgate.

This thread has teased me ever since I found it when I joined almost 2 years ago. Now that the bulk of the mechanical stuff is built the way I want it, I am considering painting my rig. It should be stated that this is not a daily driver. but rather a weekend Toy. Desert pinstriping is a way of life 4-wheeling in AZ so I do not want to spend a lot of money.
I have sprayed a van and a bunch of fiberglass bodywork in the past with decent results. I have the air compressor and can borrow the spray equipment. That said, I kind of want to rattle can it. This is because I can do a field fix if ever needed
While I'm not a shiner, I don't want it to look all bubba
either. If I could spray the rattle can evenly I would try it, but the home jobs I have seen in person have sucked....like 3VZ sucked.
My 4Runner is silver with the original paint and stripes. There is minor surface rust coloring on the roof and that's it. The paint is just flaking off and totally burnt having a life in Arizona.
My three options as I see them are:
1. Solid olive drab from a rattle can (maybe desert camo tan?)
2. Silver from my equipment
3. Silver from a Maaco type cheap place
In all three cases, I am doing the same amount of prep work. The nice thing about the silver is that the door jams, underneath the hood, etc. will not have to be sprayed, and I am anal enough that the color mismatch in those areas would bug me.
Has anyone actually spent a reasonable amount of time prepping the paint then rattle can'd their truck? How long did it last? My likely choice right now is #2, but I'm not sure.
Any painters out there that know how long it takes for paint (all versions) to fully dry/cure? In other words, how long would it have to sit before branches can drag along side the body?
Any input would be appreciated.

I had the fiberglass fenders on my 97 pre-runner style 4runner sprayed at a shade-tree style Spanish speaking place on Grand near 75th ave a few years ago...$150 and they did a great job. Need to stop in and see what they want to shoot my hood...
The Toyota yard on 40th St and University is supposedly going to re-open this month and used to have lots of 1st gens.
There's a stereo shop on 35th ave and Bell that has OEM style radio surrounds for about $15. Had to get a "pocket" for the Anthracite truck the other day and sifted through a bunch of older style surrounds.

Looks like the Montana Mountain loop. Did it last spring. Toward the top, everything in the shade was covered in ice and snow, which made some of the steep switch-backs pretty scary. It's a nice drive with great views if you are used to ice (I'm not).

Sunday morning about 8:00....? Looks like there's a small parking lot area to the NE of Hewitt Station Rd that may be a good meet up/air down spot. I'm not familiar with the area at all so if anyone has another suggestion for where to meet, let me know!

I have painted every single one of my toyotas. My recent one being quick and careless, but ones in the past being more thought out. Flat or ultra flat spray is best and hides the imperfections well. I am going to re-paint my camo here soon with a desert tan, and black cage work. I never really prep alot, just a fresh wash and coat of primer. One of the trucks I had in Iowa I had painted black camo, ultra flat black, high gloss black, and a charcoal grey. I loved how it came out, but black is just too hot for AZ
At the same time I'm finally going to paint my bumpers so those will come off too. I'll probably do this on the weekend of the 18th. Hopefully it doesn't take too long

Best I can tell is it's all just dirt roads with "playgrounds" scattered about. We do this "geocaching" thing and I read tonight that lots of folks do this trail in 2wd's (even an Audi convertible for one!) I'm going to spend the time and prep it well...not show car well...but well enough to hopefully last a couple of years. I can't decide on desert tan or olive drab, although I'm leaning towards olive drab. You spray in your garage? I will probably remove the hood, fenders, tailgate, and doors so I get access to the door jams, etc.
At the same time I'm finally going to paint my bumpers so those will come off too. I'll probably do this on the weekend of the 18th. Hopefully it doesn't take too long

i just want to go on the record and say that while RTV says "gasket maker" it should never be used to make an entire oil pan gasket. I bent a 6ft prybar trying to get the damn thing off.
and... do I have to drop the front dif to take the oil pan out? Or can I just take that bell housing bracket off to get the pan out? After a few hours (2 too many) I decided to call it a night.

You can just lower the diff by loosening the 3 19mm 'big' mount bolts or remove them and support it with a floor jack. This will give you enough room to remove the oil pan.

Looking back, having the diff lowered would've really helped with access to the pan bolts. Thanks for the tip btw, I'm still not use to this 4wd stuff.
