Actually, per the FSM:

Wtf, damn. I've always just bought the proper gaskets at the dealership and used rtv for known problematic spots and corners. Glad I haven't left for the dealership yet.

Head count time...

We'll be at the parking area off of Hewitt Station Rd at 8am. Ch.12 on the radio.

The more the merrier, will be following the mapped route on the link so if you're running late, catch up!

Planning on geocaching while we go so we have around 15 stops mapped out. Usually don't take more than 10 minutes or-so each.

Hope to see some 'Yotas out there!

I'm not sure there are gaskets for the oil pan available. I would recommend the Toyota Black (p/n 00295-00103) or the permatex 'right stuff'. The permatex is in a pressurized can (like cheese whiz) and is very easy to apply. I used the latter on my oil pan and diff covers. If you haven't used the stuff before, I put the bead on then smear it down on the gasket surface. I've never had a leak doing it this way.

Like 'which oil to use', there are many ways to use FIPG.

I did some Sherlock Holmes-ing on this some time back. Here is a cut and paste of what I posted in another thread about this.

Apparently gaskets were used pre '85.
Cut and paste below.

I knew I had dug this up before and had to look around to find it again. This explains some of the confusion about cork gasket vs FIPG. Hope this helps someone.

What I found after poking around

...though if you read through them, you will find many are very similar. It looks like I have accumulated red, blue, black, and gray over the recent year or 2. I remember using the red on the cylinder head gasket at the 2 spots indicated in the FSM where the cylinder head/timing cover/block all meet up. It worked fine. I also used it on my rear diff after I put in the lockright and it eventually leaked. However that may have been on me as I also used the Toyota paper gasket in addition to the RTV and have since read it's better to do one or the other, not both. It is now in there with Ultra grey that came with my TG stud kit. So far so good, but it hasn't been in very long yet. The black and the blue are unopened and I'm not even sure how/why I came to own them.

I wondered about the gasket thing too and finally poked around a bit to learn more. What I found:

I have a 1984 FSM here at home as well as a Haynes '79-'92. My '84 shows the exploded views of the engine with a gasket for the oil pan and specifies applying "sealer" (no part number) between the gasket and engine at the four corners more or less. (there is a picture) It also does not list the torque spec if ft-pd but the other measurements given all appear about half the torque listed in the newer manuals. This is confirmed in the Haynes that lists 4.5 ft-pd for '79-'84 and 9 ft-pd for '85 and newer.

The '85 and '93 manual show no oil pan gasket and specify "No. 102 seal packing" (Part No. 08826-00080) to be applied in a 5mm bead on the oil pan and on the engine in the four corners. (at the joints between the block/chain cover in front and block/oil seal retainer in the rear) All this sealant is to be applied in 5 min or less or you have to start over. The only other difference I saw was the pre '85 manual indicates the pan has 3 studs/nuts and 15 bolts while the '85 and newer have 2 studs/nuts and 16 bolts.

The '85 manual (a PITA to use as you have to scroll through the entire manual)

all i know is that the seal was a pain in the ass to get off the top of the oil pan. getting it cleaned out of all the grooves took nearly an hour.

Job is finished now though. Just can't believe how much crap you have to move to get the dang oil pan out. Three jacks later, the truck went up, diff came down, engine went up, and the pan finally came out. Later today is either Super Bowl or trans pan gasket/filter.

If anyone is interested, a couple of others and myself have a Lower Ajax run planned for next Sunday the 12th. It's going to be a shake-down run for my rig, so nothing hardcore. Lower Ajax is similar in difficulty to Woodpecker, for those that did that run a few weeks ago. Who knows, if all goes well and everyone feels up for it, we may push through Upper Ajax as well.

Ah shucks man....I won't be in town for this and I wanted to go on the shakedown run. Lord know's I won't be able to keep up once you get it dialed in. CRAP!

No worries Ted, it's probably going to take me several runs to get this thing dialed in anyway.

trail run...probably woodpecker again.

If anyone else wants to go, I'd like to go on the 25th. As I'm gonna be out of town on this weekends run with 87Deathtrap's shake down, I'm hoping he and others would be good with this much advance notice. Still have the front suspension I need to take care of but that should be all squared away by then. I'd like to leave a little earlier but that's up to the masses. Post up if you're game with this much advance notice...and the more the better.

Unfortunately, Saturday runs are out for me for the next couple of months. The daughter plays baseball on Saturdays and I don't miss games.

Excellent...they seem like good people...would be good to have another chance to get to know them better.

And, if yours is like mine, getting the OK from the other half...knocked enough off the list to secure this next run. Do you think Travis and or Conner would do the run? Might be a bit to easy for em now...

Anyone else....GliderAz, BLKNBLU, AngryBob, MikeS, AssyrianRocker, Punklberg....anyone else I'm leaving out.?..

We're committed to a Sheep Bridge run with an old friend of mine for this Sunday.I'd like do the Woodpecker run the 26th(?) ....the way gas prices are going up, these runs are gonna get less frequent for the SC'd truck!

Anyone got opinions on if my truck would be ok for Woodpecker?

Already got the go ahead from the ol' lady . I'll see if they can make it, Woodpecker can still be a challenge, as long as you do the obstacles. I think Travis has some getting even to do with the Firehole!
I just ordered a bunch of new parts that will require another tear-down, but that shouldn't happen until at least March, so I should be good to go!

Taking a road trip right now out to Calif. to visit family and friends in the F150. Getting around 16.5 MPG on the trip out and already at about $110.00 for fuel alone. As to if either vehicle will be able to take the run, I'd say absolutely. I've ran it twice, once in each 4Runner. The 90', locked in the rear on 35's and the 97', mild lift open both ends on 32's. Just have to pick and drive the line carefully. I don't think I'll be getting a traction aide any time soon so my driving skills will have to improve.

Sweet! Glad to hear we're both "pre-approved"! I'm gonna see if I can convince Brandon to come along on this one. I've only been mudding with him and never on a trail run. He just picked up an 89' reg. cab pickup "for the shop"....not quite sure yet of his plans, but I showed him the video of Conner's...we'll see what happens.

Anyone else want to join this trail run...there's something for everyone on WoodPecker.
