painting 88 Runner with spray balm - anyone?
I was thinking about painting my 88 4Runner with spray balm and wondering if there was anyone else out there who has done this? How many cans did it take, what did it look like when you were done? Does anyone have any pics they are willing to share?
Also, the removable top has some damage on it, and I was wondering what the best way to fix this would be? The window on the passenger side has rusted, and a patch of fibreglass is missing. Suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

for any interested, this is a great write up on a roll on job this guy did to his truck. Looks really good, and he says it was approximately 77 dollars to complete. Check it out.

I tried the rattle can clear coat on a little spot on the back of the truck for testing and it looked pretty good. I just havent had time to do the whole truck and now its winter and dont really want to start it now.

I think so too. It's the balm!
Have to admit, it's hard to beat the price of the spray balm. But if you have a compressor already, get a $30 spray gun and another $50 of paint and you can have a nice paint job that holds up better to abuses off road.
Naturally, that's what I did and I've very pleased with the results. Started with this~

I did mean spray paint - us Canucks, we have strange names for things. I wasn't able to take pictures of the damage to the top (but I found out that one can purchase L beams which have been made from fibreglass) which will be of great assistance. And for other interested, I found a great thread about painting with Boat paint, anyway, here's the post for those interested - I think this is what i going to do in the fall (if I get the 4Runner)...
-there are a few good threads about this - i can't find the one I first read, the OP call sign was Brain and he painted his truck black, it looked damn fine when he was done. Anyway, here are some good threads...

Mattk - truck looks good. How was the orange peel effect, did you get a lot of variances in the paint hight/depth?
Dingman - this also looks really good...what was your experience with using a compressor, air gun and paint? What paint did you use, did you have to prime, how much was total job and how much time did you invest? (Sorry for the 20 questions).
I actually quite like the look of these home paint jobs, and seriously, who's going to complain when spending anywhere from 50-200 dollars compared to 1 - 5000 dollars.

Man, I had zero experience and I basically went into this blind. I made lots of mistakes but the dingin' paint job still came out great is is holding up well.
To answer your questions...
Here's the paint that I used. It's supposedly a "durable" fleet paint. They didn't have the color I wanted but the guy said he could do Olive Drab - well, he missed. I turned out to be alot lighter but oh well, I kinda like it. It was also sold as a glossy paint and I had him add flattener. So, anyway, the color change and the flattener brought the price up to about $100 for a gallon and the activator. I think that included the primer too, now I'm forgetting.
Anyway, at first I forgot to use the activator. Then I didn't read the instructions so I was using about half the air pressure I should have. Then, I didn't warm the paint. It was also below 50°F when I painted and that's too low according to the instructions.
Oh, and I ran the air straight thru from the air compressor to the paint gun, no dryer\oil separator involved.
So, about the only thing I did correctly was point the gun at the rig.
Anyway, I got zero runs, zero fisheye and apparently a darn durable finish. I've been wheeling it for nearly two years and have had zero chips and lots of branches have tried to scratch the stuff and it's barely marked.
Oh, the last thing I did wrong was I should have put some kind of clear coat over it. I have several black walnut trees in my yard and if a walnut falls on the truck and sits, or if mud sits and dries on it for a few days (which does happen), it stains the paint.
Prep- we did ALOT of prep. Sanding pretty much the whole thing down, put bondo in several areas and primered the whole thing with Rustoleum.
All in all, I'm really happy with it, except I should have left it all green and not painted the bottom with bedliner. That wasn't a good idea.

well, at least you sprayed in the right direction@!
but hell man, it looks good. I be happy with it.
Dare I ask what condition your frame was in? I'm worried about my frame, because the body is quite rusty.

The frame had plenty of surface rust but we were able to poke, drill, cut and weld on it without finding anything bad. I have seen plenty that age with swissed frames too tho.
