Winching puts ENORMOUS loads on a front bumper.

Not doubting you i like ur work but my warn winch mount for my 89 only had bout 6 bolts on it not the strongest design( weak braces) but it took a 8k wench fine....

Sounds like I should do some FEA testing to double check where the weakest points are.

I ran through a few simulations for the bumper and did add make a few changes such as adding an extra piece to help it resist any torque created by the receiver tube being higher then the mounting area. The picture here shows how it would fail if it were to. The deformation is greatly exaggerated to make it clear. The colors though shows the amount of stress in the steel if there was a 8000 lb load pulling from the hitch tube. In this case I am not close to the point at which the metal could fail (yield stress). My lowest factor of safety (like a safety cushion for designing for the what ifs) is around 1.5 which I was hoping to be higher. Because people can and do anything possible to a Toyota I am going to add at least one if not two more mounting points on each side.

Now test it with the pull coming completely normal to the bumper, not axial and double your load.

In theory, theory and practice are the same.
In practice, theory and practice are different.

In theory, nothing works but we know why.
In practice, it works but we don't know why.

When theory and practice come together, nothing works and we don't know why.

^^ X2.. I am no theorist. That is why I am studying manufacturing.

I am going to put 1 or 2 more mounting points to it and then Ill put it to the test.

I am probably missing something but it looked like this winch bumper you make on your website uses the same six mounting points? Have you ever had any troubles with it?

Finite Element Analysis is theory.

Yep, snatched it clean off a truck when dude tied the tow strap to the top of the stinger. Not my truck. Bumper was bolted and welded on.

I'm just warning you, you try to make it idiot proof and you'll find a better idiot that will tear it up anyway.

I always beef mine up and weld them on in addition to bolting. Bolting them on just makes it easier to weld

That's the problem with stingers and light hoops idiots tend to hook to the first possible thing.... thats how i lost my mount.... couldnt exit my truck and a idiot snatched me out by my light hoop... oh well maybe i should hace tried harder to get to my front.... but i dont run with them no more so no worries!

old, but i would suggest more wrap around quarter panel protection with mounts to the frame...

edit: with regular 3/4" D-Ring mounts instead of the rings you used on the front bumper...

I haven't looked into them much and I'll probably not be doing much with tube right now but hopefully some tube bumpers and whatnot will be something that I could do down the road.

I love the bumper and especially how it drops to cover the radiator but not too low to hide the tow hooks it for sure needs a winch mount, and holes for 3 6inch Hellas if you as me

Thanks man. Leaving the tow hooks out was one thing I wanted. I have to redesign it for a winch. It is too low profile right now for one to fit behind it as it is. You want 3 holes for 6" lights?
