welding axles or spool?

ok i've welded rear ends of derby cars before, my question is will this also work for the '84 4runner. or should i buy a spool for it? and what about the front, probably going to go with a locker but just wanted some input on that too.

If it is strictly a non pavement rig, then sure, but if you plan to dd it at all, IMO you'd be better off with some selectable lockers front and rear.

Good luck and welcome to Yotatech!

i would suggest getting a real spool for the rear rather than just welding it, as long as your set of it being locked in the rear. i just put an aussie locker in the rear of my 88, and an elocker in the front.

It's known as a Toyota 8" axle. Eight inch because of the ring gear diameter.

I have a Yukon spool in my rear axle. I got it from Randy's Ring & Pinion for about $210 a couple years ago, but I just noticed the other day that All Pro Offroad advertises spools for like $180 or something.

I wouldn't recommend it for a daily driver, but it's awesome in my trail beater. I used to have a Lock-Right in it, and I prefer the spool (on road and off).

gonna regear? go with a spool.
not regearing? weld it up.

i'm probably going to go the lunchbox locker route on my pickup. don't have enough money for new tires all the time with a spool

so far i've heard nothing bad about aussie lockers. i know the 4 cylinder carrier has something to be desired, but i don't put all that much abuse on my truck
