Transfer case ???s

I have an 83 SR5 toyota 4x4. Got the motor in it, running great. I put a w56 tranny 5 speed tranny behind the carburated 22r. I plan on buying the dual adapter kit for the transfer case. I am going to order it tomorrow, My question is... I have 3 transfer cases not sure what years they came off of but all in good working order, I know they are all gear driven but but how do I tell if they are 21 spline or 23 spline. What do I need to know before I order the dual adapter? Tanks guys...

Simple, just count the splines on the input shafts:

Depends if you are adding 4.7 gears at the same time you build duals, then you want to get a 23 spline dual case adapter with 23 spline 4.7 gears (stronger).

Sure you got a W series and not a G. Your front tcase will need to match your tranny for forward or top shift and the rear case has to be a top shift.

Need a dual case adapter and any other goodies, hit me up, I'll help you out.

Good luck.

I have 1 of the Transfer cases mounted to the tranny at the moment. All 3 transfer cases I have are top shift. I just looked at marlin crawler at the g series compared to the w series. Yes Im sure its a W series because all the g series are forward shift, correct? Im not going to add any gears at the moment because of money is tight being a single Daddy. I will check out your site for other things I need, Thanks for the help Wabbit.

If money is tight, going with a single case and 4.7 gears is cheaper. Dual cases require drive shaft work and a new cross member.

Hmm thats something to think about. But I already have the steel to build my crossmember and do my driveline work. I work at a machine shop as a machinist, so the tools and materials are easy to come by. I just dont want to have to do my drivelines twice this way I can go to 4.70 gears later on and not have any issues with the driveline. I ave been waiting on building my driveline and crossmember because I put a w56 tranny in it and its a bit longer than the stock tranny. So building new drivelines and crossmember is a must anyhow. Thanks for the input, much appreciated. Sounds like next pay day it will be 4.70 gears or armor one or the two...

I got a second tcase with my 4runner, and plan on going the dual case route down the road. Decided to go with the 4.7 gears first, less down time in the end. Install the 4.7 gears in the spare tcase, swap the cases and its back on the road. If it wasn't my daily driver, the extra down time wouldn't be a issue.

But in your case, if you have to redo the shafts anyways, then dual cases now might be the way to go. More gearing options And if you can do the work your self, the price isn't as bad.

Why do you have to have a new crossmember?

With dual cases your OEM one won't work. and you want your investment armored as well. The OEM crossmember is a rock magnet.

I agree with you that the stock crossmember sucks, I had ran dual cases with the stock crossmember for close to 6 months before i upgraded to a buper beef one........?

Off subject here. What if you run dual cases with 21 spline? Is it IMEDIATELY going to fail at rear output? I have the dual adapter with 21 spline and 4.7 in the rear case. Please tell me i didnt just waste my money with the 21 spline.

No.

I have duals with 21 spline stuff. Its been fine for 2 years.

23 spline makes sense if you are doing it all at once. I started with 4.7's and to mate to my W56, I had to run 21 spline. Then, when I went duals, I didn't want to redo the input on the rear case, so I went with a 21 spline adapter.

I'd imagine the failure rate is much higher with V-6's and V-8's, especially when coupled to quite large tires. With a 4cyl, and smaller tires, I've found that breakage is much less common.

You should be fine, but if you ever plan on going any larger than a 35" tire (even with 35's I'd recommend it though...) you're going to need to regear your differentials to something lower than the stock 4.10. Gearing properly to match your tire size relieves stress on your drivetrain so breaking parts will happen less often...ie driveshafts, output shafts in your t-case etc...I'm not saying that if you don't you're gunna break left and right, there will just be a greater chance of you breaking.

I have 5.29s on the way. I also have 36in Iroks ready to be mounted and installed. I'm not going to bash it on the trails too hard to begin with.

Another question.....has anyone used the chromoly birfields, not the whole kit, just the birfields. I plan on running ARB up front. Just want to know if i need the whole axle shafts or just the chromoly birfs.

With 21 spline in the rear case, just be sure to use low range there first and only use low range in the front case when needed.

Save up the extra $100 or so and do the whole thing. All you will do is move the weak point from the birfield joint to the necked down outer end of the inner shaft.

You want the 30 spline Longfields, then you'll never have to worry about it.
