Re-gearing maybe locker
After really trying to push the runner this weak and towing season approaching I have decided to re-gear and maybe lock the rear.
Questions:
What gears for 285/75/16?
Where to get them?
Arb or e-locker(if I can)?
Any one know any shops for this work, Im upstate but work metro NY

What tranny?
What engine?
Most have 4.88's with auto's and 3.4's.
I have had several good dealings with Drivetrain Direct.
Reider is closer to you.
Keisur will tell you how much Randy's blows.
Search the PBB vendor section. Lots of good deals and places in your hood rather than having to deal with California and the West Side.

http://www.pirate4x4.com/ is not for the faint of heart

Either choice for a locker is a good one. The advantage (IMHO) goes to the ARB since the compressor can be used for trail air. It helps justify the cost a little........
If memory serves me correctly, a 285/75 is roughly equivelant to a 33-12.5, so, with an auto tranny, 4.88's to 5.29's should be fine.

Notice I said search on PBB, not ask or post.
The gear calculators are all fine and good, but they go purely by tire diameter, not width, weight or tread.
I have 5.29's with a 3.0 and automatic turning 33x12.5's. According to all the charts, I am way out of whack. According to the seat of the pants and gas mileage figures, I am right on the money.

I never really could figure out the gear calculators they never seem to work out when driving @ speed and comparing RPM's. FLYG I just checked out Pirate ( W/ my mouth
) and the whole site seemed a little confusing compared to yota. I did notice the newbie area and will check that out for info in the future.

I'll say this. I just put 5.29's in front and rear with 35" BFG MT's.I did all the work myself and had never done it before. Went through drivetrain direct, and couldn't be any happier with the service. The guys there are awesome, and helped me with every question I have, and the truck actually works (haha). If you get anything, get it from them.

first off, find out for sure what gears you have, lots of limiteds came with 4.30's there used to be a link on 4x4wire.com about 2 years ago to a site that had all the codes, i don't know what it is anymore though. if you have 4.30 now you more than likely won't tell any difference going to 4.56, that is only about a 5% difference or so ( i think). anyway, if you had a 5 spd, 4.56 would probably be good, but if you are going to be doing towing and stuff i would probably go 4.88's.
take this with a grain of salt, i live in georgia, we don't have big mountains to drive over or anything else and i like my 4.30's with my 285's just fine. the only annoying thing is that at higher highway speeds 75-80 the tranny seems to do a lot of work between overdrives but my gas mileage isn't any worse than before on the highway, around town is a different story.

I really appreciate all the info you guys have sent my way. Im still torn between 4.56 and 4.88. I know 4.30 is too small as I can really feal the difference from before and I tow a small boat up big hills. Any one figure out MPG w/ either 4.88 or 4.56 Im not worried about gas prices just curious.
