A Detroit is locked in all the time, the only time they unlock is when one wheel has enough traction to overcome the spring inside the locker itself.

Fine for the rear axle but a no-no for the front axle.

Even having a Detroit in the rear makes for some hair standing times on a snow or ice covered road.

The vehicle want's to go straight ahead because of the locker, steering is very effected by that.

so an aussie engages only when you gas it? if it is the exact same principle as a detroit, why are detroits so much more expensive?

A Detroit replaces the whole carrier, and is therefore MUCH stronger than an Aussie which only replaces the spider gears inside the stock carrier.

Have you read the Lockers FAQ sticky at the top of this forum?

If you're going to run 32's with 4.10's, I wouldn't think you could break either one. As far as Detroits breaking...hmmmm maybe somebody else can chime in with a story about that. If your going for the easiest install WITHOUT tearing the ring and pinon apart, then go with the Aussie. Just don't put it up front. Put something in the rear end first, who knows that may be good enough and you won't have to worry about the locking the front.

I'm happy with my aussie in the front though I did install Manual hubs to do so. I've heard some crap about the tru-trac's breaking but not the full on lockers themselves.
