I had an International scout II that had some very long shackles on it when I bought it, must have been about 5 inches. It was very very squirly. I would not recommend anything much longer than factory.

I dunno, my truck isnt squirly at all. I say bigger the shackles the better.

*seriously, not my rig, and shackles upfront change the caster angle, so you can't really go very big otherwise you mess up your caster bad which is dangerous.

That truck has stock length shackles lol. Its the Welding abortioon above it that makes that one scary.
And yes, longer shackles will change your pinion angle which is very bad. Toyotas front axle shackles are on the backside of the axle, so it will point the pinion towards the ground.
Jeeps benefit from longer shackles, since their shackles are in the front thus pointing the pinion up towards the Tcase.

I've run 3.5" longer than stock shackles up front for years with no pinion or caster angle issues. I did that partly to counter the effects of a 2.5" front spring hanger drop up front. Shackles are braced and work fine on- and off-road:

Of course w/o the front hanger drop, you would be seeing about 1 degree of pinion and/or caster angle changer per extra inch of shackle length:

like everyone else said... couple inches above stock is all you want. the longer the shackle the more lateral movement your springs will move. SCARY!
