Anyone with on board air wanna chime in ?

I am looking for a hardmount compressor for my 4th gen to use for airing up. I spend a lot of the summer in NC and drive out on the beach a lot to fish.

Its gotten silly recently at the only close place to air up so I am just looking to get em back to 28 lbs or so until I can get back into town.

Due to the clearance issues with the 4th gen, I never see my running bigger than 32's and the most likely size is 265/70/17s.

Back in the day, every one used Extreme Aire, now I see a lot of talk around Vi Air. I want to hard mount so that I never forget it; it frees up space in back; I can do a tank if I ever need one.

Anyone with any experience want to chime in ?

1. What size do you use and why (Vi Air 200 vs 400)
2. Do you have an onboard tank...I read anthing less than 5 gallons is useless
anyway
3. Do you have on/off switch in cab via a relay under hood or do you just pop the hood and do it manually - I can do either , just curious ?

Any thing else I should know ???

Many thanks

David

i'm still a firm believer in the extreme aire only because i have one and it works great. abit on the expensive side but i've also heard great things about the viair so you really can't go wrong.

the other option is to go w/ the offbrand of the extreme aire. the company is called Aim Industries. Their cost is much cheaper but of course, you pay for what you get (customer support).

i have a switch mounted on the left dash my the steering wheel (next to center lock switch). the compressor is located between the firewall and the air box so it'll fit snug.

good luck!

I have the Viair 200 hardmount On my 4Runner to fill up my 32's and i'm happy with it. to get from 15 pounds to 26 it takes about 2 mins or so. I only go to 26 because it is safe to drive, and i can fill up when i get home, also saves the life of the compressor. I dont have a switch in cab yet, i do it manually, but i do plan on putting a switch inside soon.

I have a Powertank PT-10 in my 94, a 20lb ex-fire extinguisher that has a Powertank handle and bracket in my 87, and also a portable or hardmount Superflow MV-50 compressor (from Schuck's that is only $49 and puts out as much air as a Viair 400 that costs $299~2.5471CFM)

I have heard lots of problems mounting compressors underhood if it isn't totally sealed, plus the heat from your motor can rellay affect the life span of your (proposed)extremely large investment. I just received (today) my new Superflow MV-50 from ebay, and it will blow my 31" M/Ts from roughly zero to 35PSI in just about 2 to 3 mins each. I think this would be a much better investment than a $400.00 compressor. Even if it only lasts you a year, you could buy 6 or 10 of them for the price of one outback setup!

I use it alot to fill trailer tires to 85psi and today i filled a forklift tire from 0-90 in about 15 mins. keep in mind that the forklift tires are 14ply and 31" s tall... simply amazing for $25 i already boufght two more one for the runner and one for back up if it ever takes a crap!

David, see this thread...

if you can pick one of these up for $25 (try one of the links posted), or even $50, its a no-brainer.

The link that GoodTimes posted about Lars Dennart's set-up is the way to go, it has been very reliable and at a reasonable price.

You can't beat these compressors no matter how you look at it and the reviews on it speak for them selves.

This was my extremeair set up in a 3rd gen. I would stick with extremeair again, it was 100% duty cycle, durable unit. I took my truck through water where it would come over the hood, and banged it around quite a bit, and that thing always worked great.

Try the: MV-50
There is nothing to lose for the cost and it works awesome!!! I've used mine a bunch to air up my 36" Swampers (10-30 psi in ~ 4min). I have nothing but possitive things to say about it. Don't waist your money on those expensive compressors. If you really want a crazy setup, install 2 into your rig with a 5-10 gal tank. You'd probably be under $150 for everything... and faster than nearly anything.

I bought one from Pep Boys today and I paid $62 dollars and some change. I have not tried it yet but with the reviews about it, looks like it is a good compressor. Can't wait to go to Outer Banks and tried it out there on some sand dunes. The model I have is Master Flow MF 1050.

We just bought a couple of the MV-50 Superflow compressors for ~$26 each from Checkers (i.e. Shucks/kragen). I don't know why the price was so different, but it was well worth the money to try them. I am going to mount one on our 4rnr and keep another for a spare.

I was all excited about the idea of on board air and the MV50 seemed to be a great fit in my budget and needs....until I went to my local Pep Boys and found that they are charging $59.95 for the thing.

Sure its not a bad price but damn the sting of knowing its selling for more than $30 bucks less in other places is too much for me. I already don't like Pep Boys and to knowingly give them $30 bucks is too much for me.

If there is anybody that can get a $27.05 model and is willing to mail it to me for actual cost + a six pack of something send me an email!! I'd rather give money to a YT member than Manny Moe and Jack
