So you think the Ax CP would be OK to learn on then over the Elite model I posted?

Also in a post above I put these two in.
They are nice, and instead of having a rear motor, the tail rotor is belt driven.
I talked to a guy there, and he said they are a little to advanced to start learning on.

If you think the Ax one is a good choice, I may order than one later.
Clickable picture below

Yeah, outside where I live there is a huge court for basketball, and there is plenty of room there.

Also at work we have a nice huge overflow parking area, and that would be good too.
Besides the asphalt there for parking, there is a an area with dirt.
That would be great for an RC truck.
But I think I would rather get into flying.

I saw that the Ax also uses wooden blades.
Would you recommend getting aluminum ones for it too to save weight, or are the wooden ones OK?

Oh, another thing.
On the ones I linked above, they are 2.4 GHz, and use the short stubby antenna.
The Ax one I take it is not 2.4 GHz because it has a pull out metal antenna?

I thought 2.4 GHz is the way to go these days for less interference and longer range?

I don't make a practice of recommending other boards, but since this request is so specific and YT has next to no info on RC crawlers....

http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/index.php

Hope that's cool Corey.

I am very new at all of this, but am considering the Losi RC Mini-Crawler. The RCCrawler board seems to have a ton of info on all models and is very similar in moderation to YT. No flaming, etc. (At least what I have seen in the LOSI section)

Check out the suspension simulation on this link.

As in all things involving men, motors and wheels... the mod lists are endless.

That's ridiculous. Did you actually have throttle control with that beast? IF so, it must have run pretty well.

Both the axe and the e-flite one are comparable units.....I've been talking about the axe because its the one I am familiar with and maybe a little bias. The only issue I've encountered with the e-flite one is the battery compartment is a very specific size so it is hard to find cheaper aftermarket battery packs that fit. Either way go with the one you like better and where the parts are more easily available...ask the salesman what parts are easily breakable or shear off to protect much more expensive pieces and make sure they have a steady supply of those....you will go thru them trust me

That sounds like a great place to start. What you want to do is get some chalk and draw a large circle maybe 10' or 12' diameter. Start your chopper in the middle and put training gear on then just practice hovering.....if you venture out of the circle drop it and start over.
I saw that the Ax also uses wooden blades.
Would you recommend getting aluminum ones for it too to save weight, or are the wooden ones OK?
You can buy training blades for them which won't shatter on contact with the ground....but it ends up breaking the grips. Grips are cheaper than blades. I don't remember if it comes with training gear or if it is separate but definitely get some, it pretty much just extends your skids out so you land on them before tipping over and smashing your blades into the ground

Oh, another thing.

The axe is not 2.4 ghz, it relies on certain frequency crystals in the tx/rx which can be changed easily so as not to interfere with someone else. You will get more range with a 2.4ghz. As for interference pretty soon everyone will be using 2.4 and all the older ones on the lower frequencies will have it all to themselves so that won't be an issue.

My friend Andy and I went to pick up our two strike checks today, and on the way back he wanted to stop in the hobby shop in my town.
Bad idea

As soon as I walked in I saw the E-flite Blade CX2 RTF Electric Coaxial Helicopter I mentioned earlier in this thread.

Next to them was a brand new E-flite yellow helicopter called the mini.
It was yellow, and going for $129, cheaper than the CX2 I picked up today.

I do not see the mini on the website though.
It weight in at one once, pretty light.

I got a set of the training wheels for this CX2, and I am having a tough time making it sit in one spot and hover.
I do not think it is the trim tabs on the transmitter, I think it is the training wheels throw it off balance.

I practiced with it in my living room, a little to small to do anything with it.
Got it about five feet up in the air though, and pushed the left joy stick to the far left and watched it spin like crazy
Will try it outside tomorrow.

Since this is considered a training helicopter, it has a port on the back for a USB cable to hook to your PC or laptop.
You then load a disc that has many different helicopters in its profile, and you use your remote as the input devise on your PC.
Pretty cool.
I will have to check out the price on that later, as you are actually using a real transmitter/controller to fly with.

I think this is it here, both kits are listed.
One with a controller for $99.99, and $79.99 without.
It is not just helicopters, but other aircraft too.

Ha ha, there is a learning curve with these things.
I flew it yesternight with the training gear on out on the blacktop out front.
Good thing, as I did some hard landings, but it will not flip with the trainers on.
However is does compress, and the bottom of the battery tunnel cracked in half.
No biggy, it is flimsy to begin with to save weight.

Today I took off the training gear, and just used the landing pad.
I also moved down behind my place onto the grass, much better for crash landings.
However one of the landing pads is cracked.

Going back to the store tomorrow with it to get extra landing pads, and have them adjust the flight trim.
I can not make it hover in one place.
When I try, it floats backwards towards me, when it should sit in one place.
There are trim adjustments on the transmitter, but I can not fix it, I am sure they can.

The body is a little cracked in a few places too.
Again, no biggy, this is a beginner/training model, and they make full replacement bodies for it.

When we were there, we saw this new yellow mini one there.
Basically a junior size of mine.

Something like that I could fly in my living room.
The red one I have now is to big.

Just picked up my helicopter from the shop, as I had a wobble in one of the blades.
Turned out I must have bent the shafts (inner and outer) from a "hard newbie" landing last weekend
I also had the red body replaced with a yellow one.

Helicopters are fun, but it is not fun replacing parts.
I broke a landing strut last week which I replaced, and I just broke one in my living room after letting off the speed to bring it down as it was drifting towards the TV.
They should make them out of a light weight metal as the plastic ones crack way to easy.

Here is a picture of it sitting on top of my Dell 17" laptop so it gives you an idea of how big this bird is.
It is charging right now, will take it out for a flight in awhile.
On the vertical part of the landing struts is where they crack when you come down hard.

While I was there I asked if they had any 2.4 GHz race cars/trucks.
They did, and one that caught my eye was the Losi Mini Rock Crawler.
It is not made for speed, but it will go over anything.
It too is electric, as I do not want the noise of the nitro where I live.

From their website

Found out my hobby shop also has a website as well

I will have to do some research on this model and read the reviews on the web to see how it stacks up.

I found some videos of it on YouTube.
Has anyone heard of this brand, or seen this model before?
It looks pretty cool.
Lots of places at home and work to give it a workout.

Found a review sort of on a forum.

I broke my pull starter, broke the one-way bearing...and bought a starter box!!

It is so much easier to run now.

Today I found an old BMX track and bashed my rc...it was fun, but I can tell it will be expensive to keep it up.

Corey..I was checking out that Losi crawler too. It seems small and fragile

For crawlers I like these...

Tamiya FJ40

XTM X-Crawler

Thanks Marc.
It is smaller than most out there, kind of a new class?
I found a good forum for it, and some are diggin' it.

It can be run indoors too since it is smaller.
A few have had server/motor burnouts pretty quick, maybe a bad batch, I do not know.
They run for about 1 to 1.5 hours though on a charge, that is crazy.
I am lucky to get twn good minutes out of my helicopter I just got.

And the Losi mini rock crawler section.

Some guys are customizing them with ally parts.
