Old thread, I think I have been bit.
My friend Andy (Drew on the forum) bought a cheap three channel helicopter, and is having a blast with it.

He has crashed a few times, and showed me a site where he is getting some spare parts from.

It is 100% turnkey after you get it.
Six channel, 11.1v battery, lots of cool stuff.

Looks to be a very nice unit that a beginner like me could start out with, and grow with it at the same time since it is capable of doing some pretty advanced stuff.

I thought about the RC cars, planes, ect, but I think it would be cool to get into a chopper.

 

Just a custom HPI Nitro RS4 i built. Got her for $100 and now she's worth more a lot more. Yes, its real Carbon fiber.

 

I have had a number of electric buggies over the years...Tamiyas mostly.

I just picked this Associated RC10GT off e-bay a few days ago. I am still trying to get used to how touchy the motor is. It is running rich now, so I need to learn how to tune it right.....it is super fast campared to anything I have ever owned!!

Both do acrobatic maneuvers, but the more expensive one seems to have more alloy on it, hence the higher price jump.
They also both use 11.1v batteries.

I have changed my mind about wanting a car or truck, as I have had those in the past.
I have flown model airplanes too, and you need a lot of space for them.

With the choppers, you do not need as much space.
Anyone familiar with the company that sells these, and also the two models?

Just got through on the tele to customer support.
Since I am a beginner, he does not recommend I start out with a six channel, but I should go for a four channel.

I had forgotten that I have a local hobby store only a few miles from me.
He recommended the E Flight CX2.
I Googled it, and it seems to be a winner.

Amazon has it, and it has a high rating.
I will be looking at it tomorrow at the local shop, and may come home with one.
There are mods for it too such as aluminum blades for it too.

I did some thinking today, and I am glad I did more checking.

The Blackhawk chopper above I would have been in over my head since I ahve not flown before.

The CX2 one above is better for someone just starting out since it has the two counter rotating blades.

I bet that is a kick flying that Raptor of yours.

If I pick up this one tomorrow, I will be getting extra top and bottom blades for it as recommended by reading the reviews on it.

Very impressive though...

 

The e-flite cx2 is a nice unit for starting out, another option is the axe cp by helimax. Buy yourself some extra grips when you get it though as you'll be going through those. Also as a beginner you may want to look into getting a gyro for it....it is well worth the money and makes learning so much easier as you won't have to concentrate so much on keeping the auto-rotation down.

I'm not familiar with the eflite one but I work at a hobby store and we stock helimax stuff

I got it running pretty good now, but I broke the pull starter....now I am using my drill to start it.

Most helos I have looked at so far they say they are for indoors.
I have tons of areas to fly outside, so I would need one that worked OK in a light breeze.

 

Sweet, The original GT's are bomb proof compared to the GT2's. Youll have a blast with it.

how much did that cost you from start to finish? i wanna get something like that but i dont know where to start.

 

we test them in the big shop bay we have in the back under ideal conditions. On a calm day outside flying is fine....and once you get better at controlling it even a little wind here and there is no big deal once you get a few feet of the ground and the wash isn't messing with you.
