well, found a motor on craigslist last night... bought it today...
the original owner ended up laying his SAS'd '01 Tacoma on its side... he turned the motor off right after it hit the ground, they stood her back up, waited 15 mins and started it... but there was still oil in the cylinders... ended up bending #3 rod... and when i say "bent" i mean that unless you stand the pistons next to each other you couldnt tell there was any damage... they didnt know the #3 was bent so they put new bearings in it and tried again then gave up...
so, i have a motor with 120K with all the parts except ECU (but i did snag the motor mounts) that im taking to my buddy's house to be rebuilt...
pics...

just an FYI to anyone whos wondering, yes, i know the head will not work with my truck...
toyota made 3 different heads for the 3RZ motor...
95.5-97.5 used a head with a hole for a distributor...
97.5-99.5 used a head with twin coil packs for spark...
2000-2004 used a head with a quad coil pack...
also, both of the later motors use a cam positioning sensor which my truck does not have...
anyways, got the block dropped off to its new temporary home...
luckily my buddy, rich, works for an auto dealership that has a spare 100 gallon parts washer(dont ask me why, but they have 4 of them) so hes gonna tear down the motor tonight, bag all the parts and take them to work to sit and get clean for a few hours...
after that hes gonna let me know how much its gonna need to be bored, if any, so i can get the master rebuild kit ordered...
i need to see if i can work a horse trade with the breakers near my house to see if i can swap them heads... i doubt it but its worth a try...
heres where i need some help from someone who knows their stuff... should i just replace the bent rod or should i replace the whole set?

i dont have the wiring harness from the '01... because of the CPS, it requires a different harness than the one i have...
more food for thought, according to some forums, there are up to as many as 6 variations of the wiring harness over the 8.5 year lifespan of the gen. 1 tacoma...

that's crazy man. the 2rz/3rz engine IS tiny. i just got a tacoma also (last week actually) and looked in the engine bay and was like "look at all this room!"
why did you choose to rebuild vs just picking up a long block?

i chose to rebuild rather than buy a remanned/used mainly because of cost...
used = 1250
remanned longblock = 1450
I dont have that kind of cash...
but i do have a couple new pics for you guys...
ALL CLEAN!!!

This thing is MASSIVE!

see the bends?

to put this into perspective, this piston is only .75" smaller than my SB400 slugs... and the connecting rods are actually LONGER! 5.75" vs 5.783"
and it weighs a ton... the crank is massively heavy... no wonder they have balance problems...

as for the crank, theres a wooden jig that somewhat resembles a umbrella holder... the crank is safely residing, on end, inside of that cradle...

you... suck...

hey, scoob, want a head as a spare? im gonna have one for sale real soon...
