GD piece of crap truck!!!
Pretty sure something is up with the transmission... It's nearly impossible to get into first and when it goes in, you can feel and hear 2 crunching noises... Nearly impossible to get into 2nd thru 4th, and flat out will NOT go into 5th... When in first and you barely let off the clutch it grabs and nearly stalls out... When idling in 1st it creeps forward unless you rev it... And it feels like there's no resistance in the clutch pedal AT ALL...
I'm thinking either slave went, water or bubbles in the lines, clutch is going, or flat out destroyed some synchros...
I'd also like to note that when it's off, it'll shift thru every gear just like normal... No catches, clunks, or grinding...

Any ideas guys?

My vote is for clutch. Or clutch hydraulic system.

I don't think it needs the slave to be under pressure from the clutch master when sitting still, motor off. My slave went, and when I came to a VERY busy intersection in L.A., .....the truck just started running into the intersection, ....with the clutch in! lol. Almost got me killed. I had to start it in first, "chug-chug-vrooooooooooooooom" gas'n it another 100 Ft to the gas station! FHEWWWWWWW! lol Before it went, it started giving me problems shifting, even getting out of certain gears. Right about where you are, now.... CAPUT, it just stopped assisting, period! Very scary, this problem can be.

Not saying it's the slave, but sounds SO SIMILAR to what I dealt with. The clutch would just slip, ya know? I don't think it would engage and lock up. Maybe, just doesn't sound right though.

Could be the trans, sure... But another thing I have to add..... When I had this issue, shortly after, I noticed my trans fluid was VERY low, .... refilled it, and ever since then, it's quiet, etc., but once in a while it will just pop out of 4th while cruising along, only DOWN hills, coasting in gear though..

Sorry to hear, Space!

Mark

PS> Look under the dash for leakaguwayiah of the Clutch Master, too, ya know? Mine went around 20K after that slave replacement.

Ya I agree with the 2 above...when my clutch started going it would slip in 4th, you could her it rev and watch the tac jump buy you didn't go any faster. Let off the gas it'd grab then you'd be ok.

I'm leaning towards the hydro sys. Master/slave/leak???

it could be leaking past the seals in the slave or master and you won't see it leaking anywhere. Rebuild kits are cheep.

dad took a look at it... he agrees that its more than likely the slave... he said if the master went then i wouldnt have had brakes... makes sense...

anyways... just got home from work... then its time to go to the parts store and get a new one... get home and install it before the rain hits again...

The master cylinder on the clutch has nothing to do with the master on the brakes. Hence 2 pedals and you can shift when your moving...

So if the CLUTCH master goes out, you lose the ability to apply BRAKES?

That comment really takes the YT Newbie cake right there

x2. There is nothing in common between the clutch hydraulics and the brake hydraulics except the fact they take the same type of fluid not to be confused with the same fluid. They are 2 totally separate systems.

ok, so, weather permitting, im gonna replace the master and slave tomorrow, and maybe the PS pump... also gonna replace all the fluids in BOTH systems because they both look dirty and burnt...

then gonna diagnose the transmission problem after that per FSM... theres 7 possibilities and ill check them 1 by one...

power steering pump replaced... Master and slave replaced and bled... trans still isnt shifting right...

sooooo, when i get a day off, im going to pull the trans, check the Flywheel, Clutch/Pressure plate, replace the Pilot and TO bearings, re-grease the input shaft and the shifter fork pivot points AND replace both front and rear output shaft seals on the xfer case...

suffice to say, its gonna be a LOOOOONNNNNGGGG day...

anyone with a taco done this before? Scoob? need tips and advice...

Dang, Troy, that does sound like a Sunrise to Sunset'r! lol. Yeah, with Scoob and a couple others, you'll get some great tips and be done quick like. Thinkin you might need a clutch kit?

So, you're sure the clutch slave is bled really well and it's still not wanting to shift? I'm not with Taco, but in mine, the clutch slave was the issue, ..then the master went out a week later, lol. (I had brake fluid shoes that week!...DANG STUFF IS SLIPPERY AND CORROSIVE, EH? lol)

Best wishes, Troy, you'll get it man. Hope you can stay dry

Mark

tally goes truck=1 me=0...

got the master and slave in, bled and whatnot...
pulled the transmission to inspect what went wrong... turns out the TO bearing was cockeyed, and the shaft was rusty... my local dealership exchanged the bearing, no questions asked...

slapped back together and it still does the same damn thing... still chatters taking off from a stop...easier, but still hard to shift... ugh...

a couple pics...

draining the clutch slave... this is my redneck funnel...

look how dirty the master cylinder was... there are chunks of dirt in there!

im pretty sure that my PS fluid is SUPPOSED to be red not brown...

can you tell what was wrong with the old TO bearing?

how i finally got the transmission out...

Bummer man. Good luck getting it all resolved. That bearing is definitely cockeyed - missing some rollers inside/that side or is it broken?

I never asked, but why'd you ditch the 4runner for this truck? I recall the 4runner rolling around just fine.

There is a metal slave inside the bearing that rides on the input shaft... That's what was cockeyed... As for why I sold the runner? It was more than what I needed and at the time it was killing me in gas... In retrospect, I wish I had kept it... But what's done is done...

Update... Drove beautifully on the way to work... Then getting off the freeway I couldn't downshift... At the stop light it was driving thru the clutch again... And refused to go into second so I skip-shifted to 3rd the rest of the way to work...

I was thinking that maybe the TO being cockeyed wore the clutch unevenly, but now I'm thinking that the clutch is just plain giving up life...

Any ideas?
