hmmm, not finding what I'm looking for, I'll keep looking. If I remember right the one with the snap ring still engaged was drilled and tapped, then a bolt run into it so they had something to yank it out with....

I found that one I was actually gonna try that dut couldnt center the drill bit even with a center punch the break is to jagged Im gonna give it a go again if I can figure out a way to clean up the end of the shaft some. I actually try to weld a bolt to it but that futile as well ugh. thanks again hab.

I think drilling and tapping is the best/only option just have to figure out how to make it work in my case.

How deep is it in? Um, let me rephrase that...
How far is the broken piece of the drive axle into the splines?
I'm thinking a self tapping screw/ bolt, a magnet to clean any loose shavings, and then a good yank.

I had to replace the axle in my truck when i brought it wasnt broken just bad boot but i remember taken tire, locking hubs apart, and on the spindle there is two nuts with a type of locking ring that has to come off before that part of the axle will come out. Don't think it will come out the other way. ITS OUT!!!!!!!! yea me LOL

went preaty smooth finally {except the smashed thumb}. I used a die grinderto smooth out the end of the shaft, I used a cone shaped stone and wrap a thin strip of duct tape around it just leaveing the tip exposed, I didnt want to nick any of the other machined parts inside there, may not have been necessary but I have made enough of a job out of this with out doing even more damage. I then drilled as close to the center of the shaft as I could, drilling was supriseing easy I figured that shaft would be super hard but really wasnt bad I dilled about an inch deep or so then tapped it with a 3/8s tap. threaded in a long bolt. I dont own or have access to a slide hammer so I loosely clamped a pair of vise grips to the bolt, tapping on the vice grips from the axle side{ this is where the smashed thumb came in} after about three solid hits it poped out. this has been a learning experiance Ive learned I really dont want to have to do it again LOL but if I do I wont be so intimidated by the whole thing I learned how to change cv shafts and thats a good thing. My thumb hurt so bad after I got it out I called it quits but all I have to do now is put things back together.

p.s. hab while I was trying to cool off some the other day I sprayed the rear hatch latch with deep creep after opening and closeing it a few times wala the rear light started working, hatch opens easier to double win.

Just catching up on your thread. I'm sorry to hear about your problems, at least you get an excuse to build a rear bumper. I've never heard of the shaft breaking like that, Maybe it will be easier and also safer to drop the diff and try to pull it out from the inside. Getting little bits of metal shavings inside the diff would not be good. Whatever you end up doing, good luck.

thanks stockwell, yea Im kinda excited to start on the bumper but I had to take care of this cv first. I tried to protect things from getting shaveing down in things hope I did a good enough job. pulling the diff out of one these is no easy job either.

Glad to see you made some progress. I am not much help in that area, but was glad to hear you got it. Maybe you wont have to deal with this again, but if you do, atleast it will be a little easier with experience under your belt. Great job.

Hab I will be watching that light to make sure it keeps working.
Snowshreader I will be starting the bumper hopefully the next time Im home, to give you an idea of how it will look it be very similar to ADICTED OFF ROADs 3rd gen bumper.
The wife made me go to the Dr for my thumb, just baddly brused but she said no working in the shop today becouse we had to head back to work today, so its not back together yet wich is ok except now my 86 runner has to sit outside till I get back home, ugh I need a bigger shop oh well. Thanks for checking in.
