Slow responding up-stream O2 sensor. When I did the clutch that pipe was one of the item's disconnected and it did look pretty bad..but thought, if it's not giving a code then it must be working.

Next project is the bad O2 plus the down stream (cause they both look OG) then to soak the MAF again...a new air filter is probably in order as well.

Hope this helps out a little.

Hey snow shredder first off good to hear from ya. I will be giving this a try as soon as I get back home maybe hopefully it will fix it. What did you use to clean yours?

Likely on the right track with the O2 and MAF sensors. However, check your spark plugs as well. I had a similar issue resolved with new plugs. Good luck.

MAF sensor cleaner. Picked it up from Autozone out here. When I bought the 4Runner the PO had a K&N drop in...the thing was bone dry. I mean seriously..?!? who doesn't check there's at every oil change or when you get off the trail? Granted out here it's probably a bit more dusty than in your neck of the woods but that's just poor maintenance to me. It does need replacing again though...I think it was one of those airhog filters from Fram...just needed something quick fast and in a hurry and wanted to give it a try. But wheelin out here, it has gotten dirty pretty quick. Anyhow, let me know how that works out for you... I assume you've already checked the plugs to as asked previously? I did mine at the same time just for good measure and found the center one on the (P) side stuck...tried a 5 point and then a 12 point with a 3' prybar to get it out. All slipped off the corner and really had me dumbfounded as to why. Checked the sockets against the old plugs previously removed and it matched em perfectly. Finally tried the 3/8" impact and that wouldn't budge it so I went with the 1/2"..eyes closed and hoping for the best, I blipped the trigger a couple of times and it finally came loose. Wiped my brow and said a small thank you to the Man upstairs for the success. Anyhow, it wasn't cross threaded and the new plugs went in with plenty of anti-seize. Keep us updated J.

Sorry shredder I'm still on the road but I will be digging into it as soon as I get home. I'm embarrassed to say I've never changed the plugs so that is on the agenda as well as the maf cleaning you mentioned I hope not to have the plug issues you had. The worst part is it acts up more at interstate speeds and I live in the boonies and I will have a hard time testing it out. Thanks for all your help.

No problem...just make sure you get the right style plug for these engines...NGK or DENSO with the 2 ground straps. And don't be afraid to super soak the little wire (s) for the MAF either. Disassembling the unit from the elbow tube and intake box (which needs to be unbolted as well) make cleaning it much easier...and less of a mess for the engine bay.

Took a few min while passing thru to clean the AFM, as you can see it was filthy on the outside and I'm sure the veins were just as bad. Didn't have time to do anything with the plugs but will get to the when I get home. Didn't have time to drive it and couldn't tell anything just starting it up, I'm sure it couldn't hurt.

Jason..... I TOLD YOU putting pancake syrup in the 3.4 wasn't gonna help! hehehehehe... jk..... WOW, I'm sorry to hear that you're being annoyed by gremlins, man! Especially when you're trying to get Ole Yeller done ..... BUT, you'll find it quick, I know it. Keep up with Hab, buddy... This sounds familiar, eh?

Thanks again, Jason, for helping me out the other day on the phone... I keep thinking bout that... NOT being weird! lol... Really, just because... Well, I find it really interesting that I've made a REALLY GOOD FRIEND on a web site, LITERALLY, not Cyberlarly, alone... And NOT JUST YOU, but 3-4 others that I KNOW would help me out on a whim-call. Terry? Same thing. Richard? Same thing... Now a couple others, WANTING to help me do some welding/mod fab, etc. But dude, .... you PICKED UP AND DROVE 3rd MEMBERS TO ME! hahaha.... That's a SOLID, buddy..... Yet still, the 'help' keeps coming! Gonna have to call and ask me for something, SOON, Jason... Or I'ma get a complex, homie! lol.

Take care, ...hope you find it soon!

No problem on the phone call the other night man, glad I could help or not as the case turned out. I still laugh to myself about trying to help you with your ball joints and spacers over the phone good times. And don't forget all the advice and input on getting my 86 fiasco figured out. AAAANNNNNNDDDD you introduced me to HANSENS SODA.

Thanks again for the help man, I'm glad I pulled it apart as I found a hole in the air box post filter that's how it got so dirty, I will pull a battery cable as soon as I get back a let the computer reset I forgot about doing that. And the local dealership has my plugs waiting to be picked up.

Vanes, schmanes, go for the gorgeous shiny wires...CAREFULLY!

The 99 was so bad when we got it you couldn't even see there was an element at all. PO got a check engine light the day before we drove up to get the truck and knocked a couple hundred off because the shop that read the code told him it was likely an o2 sensor. Guess you could say it was the most I ever got 'paid' for a little maintenance.
