The only thing close to a ping sound I can remember was when the axle cap came loose on the 96 and was tinking a bit. Well, that and random rocks that got stuck in random places. Not saying ignore those ball joints though, better safe than sorry if it's over 150,000mi.

thanks for the reply hab, Im thinking the wheels will end up all black In a way a small small way I like the way the turned out but then I think they look kinda clowny.
I noticed grease where it shouldnt be around the upper BJ so Im kinda leaning towards that being the culprit.
looks like I will be learning how to change them ug.

You might put your wheels on craigslist for trade. Somebody might want them. Just a thought.
Sorry I missed your post jburt, and thanks for the input. It lookes way better in my head. I will figure something out I was just hoping to have something a little different.

I know I'm seemingly alone, but I LIKE IT! hahaha. I think it looks original... lines look good, I like it. I was thinking when you started talking that only the 'inset' would be black... and I think that too would look very unique.. But hey, all black is the thing, isn't it? You can always paint em all black, then strip em, then black inset, then strip em, then PINK! You're good at this stuff, IOW! haha.

Well, ya know I like that 'touch of silver' in things, ... Aluminum, Chrome even(It's so hated, I just don't get it...... As long as it's not OVERKILL, I think it can look clean! hahaha)...... I like the black wheels look... I know it's common, but I don't think anything that looks really good on certain rigs can be played out. But sometimes, I see a really nice looking 2nd Gen Xtra Cab or something, with Stock SR5 Rims like mine... And they paint em black......... and I just don't see it. I DO NOT think it looks 'bad', just not 'as good'(??) But hey, it's NOT MY RIG, and that's the final sentence of that story, isn't it? hahaha.

Yep, every time I've looked at em... I like em, I'm sure of it! haha. Then again, I'm just one guy... and honestly.. I know you, and you're not seemingly one to really care TOO much what others think about something you already know you like.. But you just like to see what others think, cuz you're curious.......... ??? I've seen the 3rd gens with Soft 8's, Alcoa style 8 holes, Mags, outlaw2's, even rims exactly like mine, painted a 'steel' color, instead of Aluminum..... I DO LIKE the 3 spokes.... I didn't before. They just seemed 'non-symmetrical'..... being an odd number of spokes, etc.... Make sense? It's odd... On the black ones, I REALLY like em... On some other colors, like Brown.. not as much... Like Dirtco's, below.... I Also like the other ones I saw on these..... What are they? .......... OH YEAH, these.... (btw, I THINK this is "Dirtco" that we know, isn't it? hahaha).. But can't decide if I like the 5 or 3 spoke better....... Really depends on a few odd things for me, like what color the rig is, if it's lifted, how much chrome, etc.>>> These are the other ones

Next to a black one with your rims.........

And here's the soft 8's, right? NOT BAD IN ALL BLACK, PAINT AND RIMS>>>

Another type, SIMILAR to the Alcoas.... but not quite. They're too.... flat faced?.. But you get the idea, and the 97 in the pic... sporting a CON-FERR? HAHAHAHA....

BUT, I think these, hands down.... TOTALLY SCREAM, "JASON_TN"! hahaha...

JK............

I even think the 4th Gens are starting to grow on me with the right set up.....

Hey, you could forget the rims and slap one of these in there and call it a day? >>>

Actually, the one you got in there is probably more proven, yeah? I don't know much about the V8 4Runners... Assuming it's a decent heart though, right?

OK< sorry for the tangent... Just thought I'd TOTALLY distract you from the OCD moment you were risking on heading into hahaha. BTW, ... I'll gladly delete this post.... aside from a lil bit of it... Just thought I'd shoot the bull with ya for a minute... Let you see it... Then I can clear up this post for the most part! haha.

What if you masked off just the outermost strip of the silver and painted the rest black? Similar effect but more muted? I dunno, my fashion sense is that if it's not covered in grease and/or dirt you aren't having enough fun so guru I am not.

Upper ball joints. Pickle fork to get it out and ball joint press to get it in. I did it without the latter kit. Seriously don't recommend it. With the proper tool it shouldn't be a big deal.

hey mark LOL thanks for all the input, no need to worry about delete any thing from my thread LOl.
dont care for the soft 8s steel wwheels are just to heavy imho, I love the 5 star wheels on the second half 3rd gens Ive found a couple set of those on CL but 300 bucks for factory wheels is just to much for me.
I take a great deal of offense to the dub wheels our what ever the proper name for the the urban look wheels is, you know me and Im entirly to redneck for that lol.
I wheeled with a guy that has a 4th gen with the v8 very well built rig, it just seemed so odd to hear that v8 rumble comeing from it cool but odd, Im not real impressed with the body but I agree if built right they are way cool.
I agree with everything you said, I have always thought that wheels can realy make the look of a rig but they have to be the right wheel, I like black and shiny against a dark part the lighter the paint the more you can either way.

hey hab I really wish I would of had a way to try out a few ideas before I settled for this and didnt leave myself many options but oh well.
the ball joints I want to make sure thats the issue before I dig into them but I gotta get it figgured out soon thanks for you sugestions I truley appreciate it.

just for referance this is the wheel I have picked out for my runner when finances alow but who knows when that will be.

may be some day LOL.

Wow, those are...... NICE? lol.... I like em... just not the two tone thingy.. UNLESS on a darker color like yours! So I guess they'd look sick! BTW, .... when I walk into 4wparts, ... HOLY CRAPOLI, I've never seen so many Brushed Alum. and Black rims in my life... Some of them look like something out of Star Wars.... These are nice. I LOVE the ones Maltese got... VERY SIMPLE!

Hope you get them soon, man... always nice to get that thing you don't NEED as much as want... yet can USE! BTW, what about Redeth type wheels? His are 8 hole like SOME of the soft 8's... Really look like an Alcoa..... But they're aluminum... and SOLID! His are anodized all black. Check em out in my build or his when you have time.

hey mark, Ive been looking at wheels for my runner since I bought it I even bought a set of dick cepek "crushers" I think is what they were called but makeing 15 inch rims fit turned into nightmare, I really liked the look though. I decided to narrow what I wanted down instead of just randomly looking and decided I really wanted a spoke style wheel over a gap or hole style, I also wanted a majority black with some brushed aluminum, still thousands of that style so then price knocked out a bunch. these ION wheels are resonable in price and really the look I always had in my mind.

Maybe once she's been driving it for awhile she'll be ready to wheel again. A mixed blessing, my hubby's pushing to take the 99 on our next Colorado/ Utah trip, the biggest instigator in my building the 96. So far the little kid long trip dirt factor keeps us in the 96.
You're gonna miss the 97, even if the 86 has some serious cool factor.

Im glad she finally decided she want to have a little bigger part of it, she was more or less scared of tearing it up but after seeing the way I wheeled it she decided I was being to hard on it LOL.
she said to tell you hi back and that she is out of HANSEN's so we need to get out there close to ya LOL, she fixed mac and cheese from the recipe you gave her last night yummmm.

Haven't done much to the runner lately as I've been concentrating on my 86 and spending a lot of time on the boys 84 pu.
I'm at a point I need some help/advice with a problem I've been having with this runner, I will explain the simptoms as best I can.
1. At interstate speeds when under load pulling a hill a little more throttle for passing etc the engine seems to starve for something, the more you try to accelerate the more it seems to starve, it will down shift to 2nd gear trying to pull thru it but until I back off the throttle/kick off the cruise it won't come out of it.
2. At slower speeds or mid throttle just cruising it has a similar issue but in much shorter more intense episodes as it seems to stall run stall violently, again back out of the throttle just a bit and it comes rite out of it.

Things I've done to resolve this.
New air filter, old one was dirty but not bad
New fuel filter, again old one was not in great shape
Tried to run a fuel rail pressure test but can't replicate symptoms with out load

I'm starting to think its on the exhaust side instead of the intake side, I have wheeled this thing quite a bit and although the cat looks ok I'm wondering if there might be something floating around in there that under the rite circumstances it plugs up, not sure if that's possible but just thinking out loud. Has anybody had a cat plug up? What were the symptoms?
Let me say again the engine never completely stalls and all it takes to make it go away is to back out of it a little.
Thanks in advance for any ideas or opinions.

What the heck is it with non-coding rough running 4Runners? Different issue in my case and I haven't had a clogged converter yet so can't help you on that. Friendly bump is best I can do.

Hey Jason...when I first picked mine up, it had a similar issue. Except being manual and the more I let it creep up in engine speed it would do the same thing...almost buck/ kick a little. Cleaned the MAF and I mean really cleaned, it has seriously helped the issue. I pulled it out of the 4Runner and soaked it good. The problem seems to becoming back but I've finally had a code thrown. Slow responding up-stream O2 sensor. When I did the clutch that pipe was one of the item's disconnected and it did look pretty bad..but thought, if it's not giving a code then it must be working.

Next project is the bad O2 plus the down stream (cause they both look OG) then to soak the MAF again...a new air filter is probably in order as well.

Hope this helps out a little.
