96 4Runner 280,134 miles

Been a lazy weekend, sleeping a lot with this cold. Not used to being this tired all the time!
Did manage a junkyard run (and a backpack in the snow, thanks to the pushy hubby )
My knight in greasy clothing brought me an intake tube, a couple years newer than mine and with no splits in it.

Back in '05 I did the ISR and deckplate mods because I could. I went ahead and moved my anti-ISR stuff over to the new tube for old time's sake...

and in the truck it went.

also lubed the throttle body shaft and cleaned the mostly clean maf because it was readily accessible.

Played around with how to mount that clinometer too, that could prove to be slightly more of a challenge.

Question 1:
Okay, trying to get my winch power cables sorted. I'm going with 2 gauge and need enough from battery to rear for 2 trucks. I'm contemplating using welding cable for the cost aspect....though the cost might not be enough different. Research (internet-hah!) suggests it would work fine and to make sure to get an oil resistant form. So far I've found 100' for 1.2335 a foot...if anybody would like to share a better idea I'd love to hear it. 100' is more than I'd need, but not by a whole lot.

Question 2:(with an answer!)
I'm also trying to find out if I can use the Tuffstuff anderson connectors Amazon.com: Tuff Stuff Winch Quick Connector- 2 Gauge Wire: Automotive with the Warn andersons. They're quite a bit cheaper. It seems the Warn connector has some sort of proprietary extra bit in it so that they can only be used with Warn connectors. I did catch one post about cutting that little piece out to use with regular connectors. I'd like to know more concretely if this is possible before the buying begins.

Warn Connector
at winch

at truck

Actually found this review on the Amazon site....
'Quick Connectors
By Jon E. Miles on July 10, 2010
Verified Purchase
I have the Warn Quick Connectors and these. Both are the same except Warn has a little plastic tip in middle that prevents these from sliding on. I used a Dremel tool to grind off plastic tip from Warn Connectors on winch and they now work perfectly together. I purchased 2 pairs (4) of these with covers for the price of 1 not a pair but one connector without cover from Warn. Which would you buy ? I have tested them on Warn 9000i winch pulling out a stuck 7000 lb. vehicle with the rear wheels locked in sugar sand'

So that answers that part!

Wife abuse....

It was a little difficult getting this right, lots of trimming had to happen...but not too much trimming...

This side came out better, I'll prolly run a little trim of some sort along the bottom to make it look cleaner. The back (you know, the part you can't see) came out perfect. Of course.

It was originally for a right-hand drive truck so a lot of trimming had to happen in a lot of places. Bit of a challenge, getting it to work and also not hit the window. I think it's in there good and solid. All I have left is to wire the light.

That looks great. I have the $39 inclinometer in my '89 attached with Velcro and not wired because I don't want to put holes in my dash. I have a JDM inclinometer for my 3rd gen squirreled away somewhere. I'm afraid to trim it. I'm not the most patient person. I don't care if the lights work since there is no way I'd be off road after dark.

Both the trimming and hole-making were a little nerve-racking and patience was certainly the order of the multiple days it took (went very slowly for some reason ). I said if I put a hole in a wrong place I was gonna put a hula guy there. Hubby said they only make hula girls so I had to be extra careful! I'll put the light on the switched fuse block. I don't tend to wheel at night either so I'm not feeling rushed about it.

You know, with all the apps like Rollmeover and whatnot, plus things like scangauge or even gauge apps, my clinometer and gauges are pretty old school I guess. Then again, so am I, so it's all good.

As always more cool stuff going on in this thread. Love the inclometer, don't care if it's old school it's still cool. Can't help on the winch wiring, don't want to give any bad advice.
Just taking a minute to check in, glad to see you are getting lots done.

Hi Jason! Other than the price of cable I think I've got my brain wrapped around the winch wiring. Sorta, anyway. The buying of the stuff part is a little slow, life just keeps getting in the way.

Grocery shopping today (blech). Came out to find an 8" or so crack running diagonally from the lower driver's corner of the windshield. If it expands it will be in my line of sight. Noticed a chip there the other day, guessing it's decided it was done being small.
Well, at least I already know I have to replace the windshield before the next state inspection in July anyway. Need to figure out whether to pay the bucks for oe or go with a cheaper less quality version. Always there is something to keep life interesting.

The 99 got an antenna mount and some bits coming in for a cb set-up. Thanks to Amorphous we have a nice little cb already, I don't know yet where it's gonna go, but I'm sure the hubby will come up with something nice.

Also, Jason, your #003 podcast was awesome, and not just because of the cat, either. Loved the back and forth and the bits and pieces of information I'm getting from you guys. Thanks for the tips, like the one about the hilift rebuild kit. I need to catch up on 004 when I can get a block of uninterruptedish time. Keep up the good work and the drool-worthy facebook posts.

Eek windshield crack, no a fix that lends itself to being fixed at home. I need to get the one in the 86 replaced.
These newer vehicles are a pain to find a convenient place to mount something like a CB.
I'm glad you're enjoying the show, the cat cracked me up, I didn't notice it while recording, but I caught it in editing. I want to sound professional but stuff like that tells people we are just a couple guys sitting around yacking about stuff lol.

Windshield cracks suck. We had a rock chip evolve to a Crack all the way across in a few hours a few weeks ago in the Forester. Went to a shop we have had good luck with over the years. $199 and 1.5 hours and they were done. It even had the windshield defroster elements the factory Windshield had..

Inclinometer looks great. Nothing wrong with old school.
Did you add a wire to light it up?

Jason- I'm glad you left the cat in, had to chuckle.

Robb- lucky me, the inclinometer came with light and pigtail. Hope I get as lucky as you did on the windshield.

The 99 got a cb and antenna last week. We ran the trucks up the hill to tune swr, found the 96's antenna had a problem, took glamour pics while we were up there so it must have happened. Dirty glamour, my truck needs a bath!

Finally got some of the stuff for the winch electric ordered, plus cb antenna. Still need the cable and a few bits, but we're getting there. I'm also compiling a list of parts for maintenance on the 96, some gaskets, timing belt kit, stuff like that. Am trying to wait until summer break for that stuff. I'm beginning to think I work to support my habit and that people may do an intervention on me and send me off to a rehab center for truck addiction.

Parts are trickling in. Got cable cutters and more junk is on the way. The 99 got brake shoes tonight and the hubby figured out the parking brake pivot that's mounted on the rear axle was sticking and causing the rear brakes to stick. The air line that goes to the gauge in the 96 has a split in it so that'll have to go on the large list of things to do. Not sure how the split happened, it was run under the door sills to avoid being stepped on/ pinched.

Did a bit of trail building with a bunch of other volunteers this weekend- the mountain biking/ hiking kind. It's trail build season again!

Standing on the other side of a giant root ball (it's in the shade). We had to reroute the trail here because of the size of the tree that fell across our original trail + the precariousness of its landed position high above the creek.

That rotten kid, aka my adorable son, standing at the same spot I was above, but now we're on the other side and A LOT of work had been done. The hubby is in green not far from the kid.

And me building a section below the rock work. It doesn't look like much at that point. I'd already built the drop into the creek that you can't see. Now it all looks like a fun little bit of trail.

There were a bunch more volunteers building trail up on the hillside, lots of benching to make that happen. It's amazing how much can get done in 4 hours.

That manual comment made me crack up even more than the cat. The phone was funny too. Keepin' it real.
I'll keep listening as long as they're enjoyable. I like the ramble of interesting information and chit chat and the interview was very interesting and jealous-making too. I didn't even know about that trail/ trail conglomeration. I believe there's a long one that's south of me, but are very hazy on the details.

With 6 coming I have to hurry up and find a chunk of time for 5!
