So I took the hubs to the Toyota dealership to get them pressed into the abs spindles after the first guy bailed on me. They told me it would be a 2 1/2 hour job. That was Tuesday. After several promised times Wednesday and Thursday and Friday morning. After hearing nothing (again!) I call Friday 'round noon. There's a new service guy and a new mechanic on it. Crud. It's gonna get done today, they promise. Good. I get another call. They pressed the first free-wheel hub out without removing the brass bushing first. Toasted, smashed, devastated and destroyed the needle bearing and bushing and surprise surprise! Toyota does not sell that bushing separate.
They might have got an earful about pressing brass bushings as that was one of the reasons the first guy bailed and I know those bushings are not available from Toyota and WHY DIDN'T THEY CALL ME BEFORE THEY DESTROYED IT LIKE THAT??? Talk about madder then a wet cat!
I went and saw the damage. Super ouch! I told them I had a needle bearing on my desk (I do!) but as far as I knew the bushings were made of unobtainium. Dang! July 4th weekend, too! Oh, the words.....let's just picture steam coming out of ears attached to a face that's several miles downwards of dour!
So....time for some research. Guess who's in business again??? Off Road Solutions!!! http://www.offroadsolutions.com/prod...t-hub-bushing/ Bushings in stock! Shipped today (Monday)! Mike was good to talk to, poor guy. I can be a bit.....frantic.....at times!
So. Toyota still has my spindles. Wet cat will visit them tomorrow and implore they at least get the hubs swapped over TOMORROW. I'm hoping to be able to put on the hub lock nut and the upper ball joints in tomorrow, then tap in the bearing and inner bushings when they show up on Wednesday and button the poor truck up. For some reason I do NOT want to hand the new bits to those guys!
That inner bushing I was asking about rw, that is press fit. It doesn't sound like it needs much pressure though. I'm off to see if I can do all this and if so can I do it in the order I want to do it in? I am also going to figure out what tool is needed to get them out and have it next go-round. Pull them for safe keeping, should there ever be a next time.
The truck has been down for a week and a half now. It's just not natural.
Double yikes after reading the above. I bet they don't often deal with a mad cat that knows her stuff! Blue will be up soon now.
"Oh, the words.....let's just picture steam coming out of ears attached to a face that's several miles downwards of dour!"......... Hehe, we need a pic recreating this look.
He can stir all he wants, the 99 is having another staycation!
The hubs are home! Finally! The tech said the second hub came out like butter. He was prepared for Battle Royale but it didn't happen. Was glad to get them back. They apparently called him in from a day off (sorry Jamie) to get this done and them (and me!) out of their hair.
I've got the upper ball joints in, the abs rings on and the lock nut tightened to 203 ft lbs.
Tomorrow will be bushings and bearings from Off Road Solutions. I talked to Mike from ORS again today, that guy has some patience! Got a good grip on what to do, now I just have to make it happen without messing anything up! (Thanks again Mike!)
And it'll all go back on the truck. And the truck will drive once again! I'm having withdrawl.....
Got the parts from Off Road Solutions at 11:18 today.
Confirmed the new bearing has a race- it does- so I knocked the old one out. Got the new bearings in along with the new bushings. Froze them first and they went in pretty easy.
Upper ball joints 82 ft lbs. Brake caliper bolts 90 ft lbs. Abs in, hubs on, tires on and test drove. I'm not mad as one but I am certainly a wet cat. One very rainy day! At least I got to do the bearing/bushing parts in the garage. Had a bit of a dry spell which was nice, then more and more and more rain. I'm a little wet and dirty and have half a grease mustache, but it's okay because all I have left to do is put the abs light back in the cluster.
If you've got to get a cv shaft out of a manual hub first turn the dial to 'FREE'
Undo the 6 bolts that hold the dial on
dial should come off
unbolt the bolt w/large washer at the end of the cv shaft
Take out the 6 bolts or nuts (I have one hub with each) that hold the hub body on the flange. There are a variety of ways to get those stupid cone washers to pop out. I find colorful adjectives don't really help.
Take off the clip (not pictured) holding the shaft on. It's right in front of the washer pictured...
and you should have this (with or without wheel adapter):
Remove your 4 lower ball joint bolts and pull the spindle towards you. The cv shaft should be encouraged to leave the hub (I pushed mine out with a thumb)
Then it's business as usual for a cv change.
When you button it back up grease the bearings inside the hub in the spindle and the shaft. Once you get the shaft through the spindle hub it goes washer, c-clip (you may have to seat the shaft until the groove for the c-clip can be seen), hub body, little gold bolt w/big washer, dial w/mechanism and spring. The gear on the dial part will only go on a couple of ways. Where there is a small clip in the groove between 2 teeth-
that only fits in the larger single cut-out.
The torque specs on all this stuff is light, don't over do it.
While you've got it all apart a nice regrease if needed is a good idea. Go light on the grease. There are several excellent write-ups on it, better than anything I'd put together.
You can see the bushings and the abs reluctor ring behind the lock nut...
And the needle bearings (pre-greasing). The old race isn't easy to get out of there....That bushing and needle bearing is the part that got destroyed when Toyota tried to press it. The only way to get those little pretties from Toyota is to buy the whole hub that goes in the spindle. That's where ORS's having those parts solved what could have been a very expensive situation and dried out the wet cat.
I was just tire kicking. Anytime I get a chance to look at other trucks, I take the chance. Just like to see the differences in them. Sounds like you had a go around with Toyota. For what they charge, I am getting disappointed in their service. I have sent a truck to them to fix and still have not gotten anywhere with them. They are used to the common problems and if it is out of the ordinary, most seem to be at a lost. Glad to hear you got it back and about to get it on the road. Hope you two have a safe trip and all goes well.
We are getting rain down here as well and ready to send it elsewhere that need it. Several floodings around here. Where my dad lives, a pontoon boat would work great for getting down the streets for transportation. Luckily he lives on a hill but cant leave the house.
ABS bulb back in the cluster, can hear the abs doing its thing when I turn the key. YAY!
Drove it today, smelled some burning oil from somewhere but I think it's just the truck letting me know how it feels about the down time.
Rain. If only we could send you some, rw. Like Terry's area there's been a lot of flooding. Our house is far from the troubles but many have had some nasty surprises. Too much rain! Watch, next year we'll be begging for it.
I like seeing the differences too, Terry. Don't kick much, but there's not much available worth kicking around here. Love junkyards because you can dig in, but again, not much available...
Toyota.....after screwing up the job they tried to rectify the situation, but had they just pulled that bushing first they wouldn't have had a spittin' yollerin' mad woman on their hands. They did offer to buy me a new hub to replace the one they messed up, boy were they relieved when I came up with parts for them. They gladly credited me for the bushing and bearing for the one side. Fair enough. Would have been nicer if they'd just gotten it done in a reasonable amount of time and without the drama, but oh well. What you're saying is prolly true, outside the average thinking can be hard to come by when you need it. Seems to be true everywhere. Lack of experience with stuff like you've got coupled with average work doesn't help, does it?
HOME sweet hot, sticky, rainy, steamy HOME!
It'll take a couple days maybe to get some pics up. Had an incredible time.
Meeting BigFishAllDay and family and TBuzz and sharing Black Bear with them was a highlight and a half, what a lucky day! Even better, the next day we were coming back down the 550 hwy from camping nearish Silverton, heading towards Ouray, and saw a TON of FJs at the Black Bear trailhead, with many many many more coming up the mountain. Talk about dodging a bullet of a traffic jam! Good ol' FJ Summit.
Mr. Big Fish, I would be delighted to cross paths with you and yours again some day!
More later. Just got back and unloaded and am awaiting the frozen pizza to finish doing its thing.
Couple of teasers from Black Bear Pass....
BigFishAllDay (silver) and TBuzz (black)
The best! It rained hard in Crested Butte the evening before a planned ride on the 401 so we skipped out but that made us a day early for other stuff which meant we ran into BigFishAllDay and TBuzz for Black Bear and didn't get into the middle of the FJ Summit the following day.
Zion was wet and rainy too but again, we got a different perspective on a cool place. The clouds made for some awesome effects.
Temps were excellent too, night and day.
