When is the V6 a good idea

In the '96 4runners the 3.4 head gaskets had problems. They would routinely fail at 150,000+ miles. I dont know if the same is true for tacomas.

Amen to that, IF it's a 3.4 V6 3rd gen / late 90's 4Runners are good. Unfortunately they stopped making manual transmission sometime in 2000 or 2001.
