Turbo Kit.

Hi Guys:
I Asked my mechanic about headers , air filters etc ... and he told me these things just help the stock engine to have a better performance.
He work's on performance/race cars , and want to put a turbo kit on my 4runner 2nd gen. 22re fuel 5 speed.I know the guy is a very well quoted mechanic ( on the race world ), but my 4runner is not a race car !!
He tells me everytime " your car is heavy ,weighed in comparison with this engine " ......
So , can you expert guys advice pros/cons , and some problems I will be able to come to have with a turbo kit ?????

Here's a BIG con: cost. A properly made turbo system will run probably upwards of $2000-3000. For that price you could drop a new engine in (such as a supra swap, or even a US V8 of some kind). There were some 22re-t's, but they are hard to find, and I believe they only gained about 30hp or so. If you were to break something on one of those, it'd be very expensive to replace.

I say, go for headers, go for exhaust and call 'er done. Your 4cylinder will unfortunately never be fast, as toyotas are just underpowered. I wouldn't go nuts with the engine, keep it closer to stock, and you will make it last a lot longer.

Now, if you actually do want power/speed. There is a guy around here that is running on 44's with a BMW motor in it that can do 12's at the drag strip but then, when you go engine swapping, its alot of money.

Sure if you want more power put a turbo. I would suggest lc engineering. They know high performance engines. I do agree with your mechanic. Putting your truck on a diet will help a lot on performance gains all around. If you swap in fiber glass fenders and hood you could save around 100 lbs. If you did that you could have enough money to swap in a header and a cam and feel about the same type of gains overall in your truck. But thats just my simple thoughts on the subject at one in the morning.

The turbo cost is not the problem because turbos are more popular here.A engine swap would be a trouble cause I need to import from USA and duty taxes here are very high.So the turbo cost in my particular case is cheaper.
I'm afraid about engine consuming , if the engine accepted well the turbo etc ...

With even a cheap turbo the cost of the manifold,piping,BOV,IC and probably a couple fuel system upgrades will still creep toward and most likely over $2k plus you'll need a fuel/air controller to tune it.

Plus if the engine's a little tired you could be doing more harm then good.

if you want a reliable engine, low compression, forged pistons are a must. an aftermarket engine management system is a good idea as well

go boost have some one make a custom tubular manifold for like 300, get a tial 38 mm wastegate for 200 and a tial BOV for 200, 150 for the piping (I/C) get a junkyard starion I/C for 75 bucks and and a new innovative t3/t4 for 700, also figure 100 for a downpipe with all the flanges. IMO worth it, just takes some research and you there, PS nothing pulls like a turbo vehicle
