Personally i would not mess with those, look like they could be harder to install then the DT and not a huge fan of the design. Also if going to all this trouble the y-pipe is the easy part really.

The DT will make more power too.

The truck feels so much nicer now that it has the new bypass valve installed. Get the expected ~11psi of boost as well instead of 9.x psi. Feels much more like i expected it should. oddly the supercharger also sounds louder now.

Only problem now is that i think i have started to hurt 2nd gear. It held up great for the first few years on the stock pulley but it seems that a 2.0 + meth injection might just be too much for it.

I need the valve body upgrade and plan to get that shortly actually, one of my next mods. But i fear the damage is already done. Which leaves me either looking for a new tranny or a rebuild.

Anyone got any suggestions? Used looks to be about $600 with unknown miles and condition.

Was out driving it again today. It has more power for sure. Feel great!

Boost seems to sit around 10.5-11psi on these colder days. About what i would expect with my mods finally. No more of then 9psi.

I also have verified that i finally managed to hurt 2nd gear. It is not getting any better either lol. Held up to the stock pulley for years great but 2.0 and methanol is just too much for it.

Lesson learned. Now to find a good condition used transmission to swap in. Anyone got one laying around? Any suggestions on where to find one? Only found a few locally and they all have unknown miles and have been sitting for years.

Weather warmed up some but still feels great. Transmission stopped leaking but it also is acting funny. 1 day it shifts fine, the next 2nd gear acts hurt.

I am replacing it either way just odd. Might have found a transmission locally that will work from a board vendor. Gonna talk to him again tomorrow and see if he has one that would work.

Oh, also got a funny story from a little bit ago. I was coming home and on the access road that i use for playing around I notice one of the new 5.0 mustangs driving kinda funny like he was also planning on playing around. I was a fair ways behind him and decided to catch up so i gave it the beans. Well i saw him stop ahead and get ready for a launch.

He launched a little before i got to him, didn't even know i was there. I was already going ~85mph. I just stayed in it and ended up passing him going 110mph as the limiter kicked in. The look on his face was priceless! Seeing this SUV passing him pretty fast from behind while he was WOT going through the gears.

Well naturally he quickly re-passed me as he got up to speed but it was still quite funny. those new 5.0's are quick.

Might as well update this. Gonna be time for a new thread here pretty soon. Thinking about getting it dynoed again, if i do that would make a perfect topic for a new thread i think lol.

Well my tranny while not actually slipping, does seem to have a hurt 2nd gear to some degree. Just driving around town it is fine, feels great but under WOT it takes from 1 to 2 seconds to fully shift and it is "lazy" doing it too.

So I looked around and found another tranny locally from a 96 4wd 4runner with only 61k miles on it, less then half the miles on my truck lol. After spending an hour with the junk yard trying to find it I finally got it home. For $325 I am very happy! I was finding others for $500-$600 with almost 200k on them.

I have also decided to have the valve body upgrade done as well. I don't want to have to replace it again anytime soon. After looking around I found IPT which also does the valve body upgrade but they are both cheaper then level 10 and they are a board vendor. I always like to support the board vendors when i can.

They also have a sale right now that when combined with the $25 coupon by signing up for the newsletter comes out to around $500 for the upgrade vs $700 for level 10.

So win win all around!

I will be sure to take from before/after videos for a comparison. I am quite curious how it works out myself.

Just pulled the valve body from the new tranny. Never really got inside an auto before, always been a hard core manual guy myself. Everything looks clean and no big metal. Little metal on the pan magnets, that normal?

Fluid is a tad "orange" is about all i can describe it as but it looks good enough.

Here are some pictures of the valve body and tranny, what do you think?

Have to say i was surprised how easy it is to actually remove the valve body, even under a truck i doubt it would take more then an hour. Would be a bit messier under a truck lol.

Pics!

Meth and tuning

Just wondering, if you were able to tune out all of the high gear, low rpm "ping" when using the 7th injector and FTC? I still ocassionally get it, but turn off the overdrive to bring the rpms up and it goes away. Now that you are just using the progressive Meth/H2O, at what boost does the mixture start getting into the intake?
I'm curious because I'm comtemplating adding a meth system to compliment the 7th injector and my periodic "ping" is coming pre-boost.
thanks Josh

I have never had a problem with ping on my truck at all. I think the headers really help with that. But to answer your question yes i was able to get rid of all ping even with the 7th injector. If you are still getting ping then remove more timing.

With the setup i have now the meth starts being injected at 1psi of boost (low as i can). I have no problems at all with ping, in fact i have tuned it so that in a lot of the closed loop areas I run about 14.7:1 to save gas but still get no ping at all.

Well, i just got all the Pre-transmission work video footage done so i have something to compare to after the work.

Did some various kinds of driving and a few full 1/4 pulls. The Gtech read mid 15 second passes. Not bad, the tune is a little off on these pulls since fixing the by-pass valve but not bad considering. Be interesting what difference the transmission mods make.

Oddly while doing those drag passes the transmission seems fine again. A little slower shifting but it also has more power which would explain that. Oh well, got a fresh tranny ready so i know everything is fine for a long while.

Before mods the stall speed is around ~2500rpm's in 4WD at WOT.

Flash speed is closer to ~2100-2200rpm it seems.

Great write up, I really enjoy reading this thread. Off topic question, what plug wires are you running?

Well project upgrade tranny started today. Disconnecting the old tranny was not that bad but boy, getting it out of the truck with only a floor jack and furniture dolly was NOT fun. Took the whole stinking day.

Think I am going to buy this for the install tomorrow: http://www.harborfreight.com/800-lb-...jack-3185.html

Anyone have any experience with them? Will it really make the install easier?

Got the IPT stuff in and hopefully should have the transmission back in the truck by tomorrow night if all goes well. Not sure If it will be driveable for a few more days since we are supposed to get rain but if the transmission is installed tomorrow I am happy.

Old tranny:

New tranny parts:

Gonna be using the AMSoil fluid you see in the background. Will update again tomorrow hopefully. Wish me luck!

I have used those types of jacks on diesel trannys. They make it much easier and safer with the adjustable tilt and angle.

Well, new problem. Just pulled my trans apart to compare the internals and bad news.

The valve body is much different then the 96 transmission i got to replace it. Mine has a lot more computer stuff on it it looks like, looks more modern.

Compare 96 tranny:

To

My 2000 tranny:

Something tells me that my ECU will not like the 96 and it won't work right.

Which leaves me in a major problem. Not pulling the tranny again so need to do it right this time.

Looks like I will not have to get my tranny rebuilt, then send out my valve body to IPT and then try to sell this other tranny without loosing too much on it and the IPT work.

Anyone know what the difference in the Valve bodys are? Is one better then the other? Can either be used?

I am going to bed, majorly discouraged. If i can't get this done soon I am screwed since it is getting cold and i will not do this in the cold. Could be spring before I am able to get it back together if it turned cold.

tranny issues

Man, that sucks. Hope you are able to recoup your $ on the 96 tranny. Good luck, and once again thanks for all the videos on youtube. You do some great work.

After a nights sleep I think I may have overreacted a tad (can happen after a solid 12 hours of hard labor getting a transmission out lol).

Sat down and really looked over the valve bodies. They are a different design for sure but have the same number of electrical connections and solenoids on them.

So I am not sure if maybe the 96 tranny will work afterall. Gonna call IPT on Monday to find out if i cam screwed or not.

In other news built this little sub box to give my radio a little more kick the other day and finally finished painting it. Uses 2 tang band 5/25 subs I had for my MR2 but never used and an A/D/S/ (Very high end old school amp) P240 to power them.

All combined into a nice compact and easy to remove package.

Not sure if it will be loud enough or not but figured it was worth a shot. Can also do it again and buy a small sub for it this time.

Also got a better amp for my main speakers as well, an ADS P640.2 vs my old ADS 6.25 (almost 2x the power and a little better quality as well). Should still fit under the seat which is what I wanted.

Ok, so the transmission shop got my old transmission torn down today, seems I burnt all the gears lol,2nd was particularly bad.

I talked to Level10/IPT and was able to put together what they do with the rebuilds so this shop is using the same parts. The raybestos high energy clutches and replacing the B2 sprag gear are the most important things internally besides the valve body.

I also took the torque converter to a local shop to have it high stalled but after looking at them they told me I could just use the one from IPT since it was the same thing. I love shops that are just plain honest!

If you are in the DFW area Performance Converters is the place to go for torque converters.

So the shop just gave me the final quote, comes out to $1000 for all the work, including the valve body. Not that bad IMO. Giving me a 6 month warranty as well even though they know I will be beating the heck out of it from day 1.

In other news, I will have a 60k miles 96 transmission with an IPT valve body for sale shortly if anyone is interested. I could just sell the valve body separate as well.

If anyone knows anybody with a 96 (and I was told 97) 4runner 4wd that would like either a transmission or valve body or both, let me know. This will be a lot cheaper and faster then IPT for sure and it is brand new!

I like how you incorporated the amp in the box instead of just screwing it to the back, maybe throw a small fan in there. Me and my brother owned and operated a performance/audio shop from 2000-2004 and were Rockford dealers, I built all the boxes and did the installs, don't miss it at all. Looks good.

Thanks, yeah it turned out pretty nice. I do plan to toss a few computer fans in there if it works out like I hope. If not I am going to get some larger subs/sub and do this again.

I really like the way it turned out, nice rugged and compact. Just got to get the truck running again to see how it works.
