I finally have my 5vz all back together and am dropping it back in this week as I have time after work. It is a fully remanufactured long block I got from Oregon Rebuilders.

Is there anything I need to do before starting it up for the first time? I will obviously fill with oil and coolant, double check all connections etc. I searched online and found some info about priming the oil pump (ours is mechanical though so I don't know if we need to), filling the block with distilled water, spraying some oil in the cylinders etc...

Is anything out of the ordinary required?

I have done a minor pre-lube in the cylinders. Then taken it for a good drive that isn't too high in the RPM's. Then drain/ change the oil, after about 500km. visually inspect oil and check the coolant a couple times during. I have heard of the mineral water thing but never personally tried it. I also usually stop in a parking lot or rest area ( as I do my break in drive on the highway) and just look for leaks and/or signs of blow by. All this is only after letting it run a few minutes in the driveway and looking/listening for vacuum leaks,fuel leaks,blow by, coolant etc and adjusting timing as necessary....probably didn't have to mention that. But I also take it real easy on it and just enjoy the dirty looks and middle fingers from people as they cruise by.

 

Thanks. Whats the best method for a pre-lube in the cylinders? Go through the spark plug holes and spray it in with something? Should I hand crank the motor a few times before using the starter?

yeah I have just used a small amount of oil down the spark plug hole,then a couple hand cranks w/ the ignition disconnected to build pressure and should be good to go

Pull the EFI fuse and crank it several times to build oil pressure,put fuse back and let her rip.

 

I talked to a shop here and they recommend cranking it over without the plugs in untill the oil pressure builds up, put the plugs back in and start it up.

I got the motor in the truck and all bolted to the transmission last night (which was a pain in the a$$ to get lined up right). Hopefully I will have it running by the weekend.

Here it is before I broke the rod. I am going back to stock for now to break in the new motor and wait untill spring to re-install and re-tune for the FI.

sorry ask so many questions i find your setup very interesting its the only turbod 4runner i have ever seen. how did you tune it?

 

No problem. I am using a MAPECU2 for timing, fuel enrichment, and O2 sensor adjust while in closed loop. For fuel, I am using URD's port fueler which has 6 additional injectors in a sandwich plate between the upper and lower intake plenum. Also, I am using the Innovative LC-1/XD-16 combo to monitor and tune the AFR's.
