Well, now that I've got my engine out and most of the stuff off. I thought it might be a good idea to bring this up. What exactly do you do to break an engine in? What type of oil do you use, synthetic or dino? How long befor you can really drive hard on it, wheeling and all that stuff? Any advice would help a lot. Thanks

 

Well, don't hold me to it.. but, I would avoid the synt oil to allow the motor to break in first (this could be an old wives tale) and I would give is a good 250-500 miles driving under 50mph and gently.. then dump the oil & filter

 

Drive it like you stole it. Seriously - avoid synthetic oil until the first oil change. If you want to change the oil early then use dyno oil until 7500 miles or whatever Toyota is recommending for your first oil change.

When you switch to synthetic you can extend the oil changes to 10k.

 

I agree - I read an article on engine life and the author said that the best thing you can do is change the oil and filter at 500 miles (do not use synthics) then again at 2000 miles then follow maintenance schedule. I was also told that you should have at least 10K before you switch to synthics to give the engine time to wear in or seeat the rings etc...

yeah, don't bother w/ synthetic... heck i don't even use synthetic..

anyway i've read some stuff on just driving it hard for 500 miles but... ehe i'd rather take it easy and be safe!

Oh yeah, the timing. Before the engine went, it was advanced 10* or what ever that's about. I didn't cange it to 10, that's what the manual said it should be. My question is, what should it be when I first start the engine 0 or 10 or what else?

 

I agree use reg oil take it easy withyour nice rig.they say its one of the most important things when you get a new rig
