so im thinking that since im in the middle of lining the interior of my rig and found a little rust on the driver side floorboard and i got it out so ive got holes now. so im thinking that since im poor i can fill them with silicon backed by screen or something and then put lining over the top so it looks like nothings there and is a durable cover for the holes with out major cutting and welding ($$$$$). of course i will notify a buyer if i decide to sell the truck but the holes are pretty small and only in a few places.

so would this be a good idea for someone with little money and is there some other type of sealnt or agents i can use instead thats just as easy to do? thanks guys

 

A better fix would be fiberglass cloth (small tight weave) and resin. Gotta make sure the metal is sanded well and clean before patching. A dab of those brush on rust neutralizers would be good to keep the holes from rusting more. After dry, lay the glass and resin on top.

 

Sounds like a perfect job for some Bondo.

i was thinking silicon becuase even when dry its still pretty flexible and plus being sandwiched between screen (on the underside) and herculiner it will be ok

but the fiberglass could crack as well wouldnt it?

 

i've learned that hot glue can fix alot of things, kinda like duct tape. put my moms cat door in with nothing but hot glue. LOTS OF HOT GLUE

 

dont use silicon! i thought by puttin some i would stop some leaks i had on my windshied, i had a very lil rust along the edge where the window seats, well this did for about a week then i put some more and more, well the rust got bad really bad.

 

Silicon tends to hold water that's why you don't use it on anything that seals except water seals on a engine.

 

You can buy a fiberglass kit that has cloth and resin for less than $10 from Wal-Mart etc. I used a kit like this to fix rusty floor boards in a VW bug under the battery. It was very strong fix. It held the battery up. If you use silicon now and fix it right later, paint etc. will have a hard time adhearing later on.

 

silicone on bare metal is fine, but silicone on rust is seriously bad news.
The rust will spread faster than the black plague under there.
Silicone is also quite poor structurally so I would use the suggested fiberglass method instead.
Make sure to prep and clean the area very well before application.

...this stuff works. It's pretty big in the restoration community. You'd spend $5.99 on a tube of silicone anyway. A pint is pretty cheap considering.

 

ya know, it occurs to me that when i was doing cut throughs in trucks for huge stereos, i had to paint the bare metal so that it wouldnt rust--first primer, then some paint on top. usually did not have problems after that. but ya--silicon doesnt do too much for rust lemme tell ya.
