Replacement switch for rear window?

The rocker switch that operates the back window on my 95 4runner has broken in half (also sort of glued down from soda pop "somebody" spilled a while back). Where might I find an aftermarket switch that I could use to replace it and reposition it away from that sinkhole area that seems to collect small garbage stuff? Is removing the console to get at it a reasonably straight-forward job? Thanks. Hank

The splitting seems to happen to everyone's eventually, if the switch is operated a fair amount. I can't help you with relocating the switch, but I bought a new one from the stealership and replaced it myself a few years ago. It's a pretty straightfoward job, and I'm no mechanic.

I replaced mine with one that I ordered from a local electronics shop. You need a
SPDT (single pole double throw) or DPDT (double pole double throw) momentary on switch rocker type. They wont light up but you save a bunch of change, and you can find them to fit the existing switch hole Try this link

4mydogs.....thanks for your report of successful switch replacement. Gives me confidence to try it myself.

toy x 4.....thanks for info on specific type of replacement switch. I will remove the old one (for size measurement) and take it with me to a large electronics store in Reno on Saturday. I would like to find one with wire leads long enough to move it up under the edge of the dash. If I cannot find it in Reno, will use measurements and order one from colehersee.com.

thanks both of you. Hank

You know before you go and replace it you may just want to clean it out if its just gunked up from a soda, I had the same issue were mine would stick on occasion after some coke got spilled into it, so when I was doing my 99+ cupholder MOD I moved the switch to the dash(left of steering wheel) Pic is in my sig link, I just got a can of electronic cleaner and sprayed it up and let it dry out before reconnecting to the lines. Worth a try prior buying a new switch

WT....thanks. I just went through the photos of your console update and saw the picture of the ECT and rear window switches on your dash. I am somewhat electrically illiterate. Did you just get wiring of the same size and splice/solder to get the necessary length to run each switch to the left of the steering wheel? Is the wooden dash a custom item? I will remove the one I have and try clean it this weekend. MAYBE I won't need a new one, but if I do, I will get one other than OEM. Either way, I will place it away from the console. Again, thanks for posting all the photos. Hank

Oh simple the wireing comes from the front and goes to the center console area so just re route the wire that goes to the switch to new dash location, no splicing or re wireing Be sure to use Electrical contact cleaner since it leaves no residue or other lubricants on the switch and dries pretty quick too, can usually find at automotive stores or a radio shack type of place and good luck.
The wooden dash is factory, nothing special.

Why not go ahead and buy another factory switch? Why put something ugly in there? If you want to move it, the switch will not come with wires attached, but it's easy to do. Watch ebay, they're on there all the time...

Or go to the Classified section here on Yotatech and ask the people who are parting out 4Runners.
