Got some more pictures online tonight from the progress made since, including setting up my full-floater kit from FROR. Should have the whole deal under the truck pretty soon. No notes yet, still working on that part...

I think the electric locker is the 8th wonder of the world. I totally love mine.

I never understood what exactly a full floating axle is but it must be cool. I want my axle to float.

 

It won't actually float in water if that's what you're thinking

Notice the typical "front" axle spindle here...

The spindle takes 100% of the vehicle weight on a set of tapered roller bearings, leaving the axle shaft to only transfer the torque to the wheel and nothing else. The stock "semi-floating" setup has the axle shaft carrying some of the weight over it's length to the carrier end like a big lever, the pivot point being the single row ball bearing.

It basically means that you won't have a wheel fall off if you snap a shaft. And on this kit if you use standard lock-outs you can flat-tow the rig without any of the drivetrain spinning. Add to that the selectable locker and if you snap a shaft simply remove the left-overs, lock the diff, and continue in 3 wheel drive.

 

OK, I kinda understand now, but when you say standard lockouts does that mean you are putting manual hubs on the rear axle? Is this all going on the rear axle?

 

Yes, and yes. I may switch to the FJ-80 drive plates later on, they're similar to the drive plates found on ADD equipped rigs that everyone is replacing for lock-outs.

 

Im not one to normally envy another mans axle shaft, but I have to admit thats sweet.

I was wondering about your disc brake set up there. Are you changing the hydraulic system as well? In design the the disc/disc and disc/drum systems are rather different.

I have found where this guy has to make some modifications in master cylinder and LSPV function.

I do know that on (most?) disc brake systems instead of having front/rear seperation, they actually use a diagonal split system. Meaning that if you had a leak in the right rear of a disc/drum set up, you would loose rear brakes and for a front leak loose the fronts respectivly. However on a disc/disc system losing pressure in the right front would cause the left rear to loose pressure also.

Just curious.

 

I'm keeping it as a front/rear split, I'm not aware of anyone bothering to cross them up like you noted when doing brake upgrades from drum to disk. I have an FJ80 master cylinder ready to swap in along with an external proportioning valve to replace the stock LSPV.

 

Cool. I've been thinking about doing the FROR setup and would like to check yours out Shane. So when/where (trail) are you going to test the new mods?

 

Hey Arnold, you're welcome to come on by and check it out any time. I still need a set of u-bolts and have a couple other little details to finalize before I can put the axle under my truck.

That, and I still haven't made up my mind wether or not to do the rear shocks and a u-bolt flip at this point.

I'm going for the world record on taking the longest to prepare for an SAS :confused: Sadly I haven't made much if any progress on it.

I'm using the factory ECU, hoping to get my hands on a dual locker one but they're impossible to find at the boneyards. Would you happen to know the Toyota part number for that version? I already screwed up once on the switch and got the single version, accidentally got 60030 instead of 60020(?).
