Noob question for those with manual hubs...
I've been reading about suspension upgrades for 3rd gen 4Runners, and many suggest replacing the ADD system with manual lockout hubs if you want to lift your vehicle more than 2".
I assume this means you won't be able to switch into 4HI while driving.
Instead you'll have to stop, lock the hubs, and then pop it into 4HI ?
Noob question:
Is it bad to have your hubs locked, but the leave the shifter in 2WD (instead of 4HI or 4LO)? (This way you can switch to 4wd for ice patches?)

I bet you that not a single person here with a 3rd Gen has replaced ADD or defeated it.
Driving with the hubs locked in 2wd is exactly identical to how the truck was before you added the locking hubs.

the idea of manual hub is to unlock it when you don't need it.
when you think you might need it then go ahead and lock it up while in 2wd. Then put in to 4wd when you need to. when you're out of the woods, then unlock the hub.

Uhm.. yea more than 1000
I think mine was 1200-1300, then the install, I was lucky and convinced Central 4x4 to install it for 200... which they said they would never do again =D.
For me, It's worth it, with the lift and the Rubbing of the boots and strain on the CV's when I drive to and from work everyday ~50 miles one way, it was a no brainer to get the manual hubs... I leave them unlocked (4x2) and I get no wear... and yes.. locking the hubs and leaving it in 2wd is just like not having the hubs... everythings-a-turnin'. and no, leaving your hubs locked wont hurt a thing... Im assuming your talking about just winter time, leaving them locked and all other times unlocked... why not...

Leaving hubs locked makes your milage a little worse, I know it does mine. If I remember right, with the hubs locked you are turning the front diff gears and driveshaft. The t-case is just not engaged, so you're not driving the front, but its all turning at drive speed. With them unlocked, you are just turning the wheels and tires, not the gears and shafts. The gears and shafts are just sitting there. I hope what I'm writing makes sense, cause I'm kinda out of it today.
