Why would anyone want a 96 4Runner?

Didn't really want one. Wanted a pre-runner, but this 4runner fell on my lap for $5300 so I took it. Truck is pretty much very well taken care of. Not a single dent, ding, etc. on the car (besides the hood having a dent from the battery exploding), clear title, interior was very clean, and paint looks brand new.

Now, since it has 156K miles on it what should I replace or do? Belt and water pump was just replace before I bought it so that is done. I just flush the tranny and dif. What else should I do (change o2 sensors, wires, battery, etc.)? Where can I find quality parts on line cheap? Any aftermarket things I can do to make the motor a little more fun and not kill my pocket?

does that have the 3.4, or the 3.0? Tune up is a good idea if it hasn't been done. A cheap mod that might help is the airbox mod. Do a search and see what you find on that... I don't know much about it, but i think its for performance gains.

 

^ All 96's had the 3.4 (in regards to V6's).

Anyway, I was kidding about the 96 4Runner comment, in case you didn't know.

Get the maintenance up to spec before you start modding. One of the first mods I would do is the "deckplate mod." The tech section has a write-up on how to do that cheap mod, worth about 5HP to the 3.4. Then, just start reading through threads and sort the junk from the good stuff. No real need to replace the 02 sensor if it isn't throwing a code or getting crappy mileage. The 97 I just sold had 195K on it before the 02 sensor went south.

Fuel filter might be a good idea. It is easy to do and not very expensive. I can almost gaurantee it hasn't been done on your rig (since Toyota considers this a non-maintenance item).

 

Christian, thanks for the correction, I was tryin to remember if it was 96 or 97 when they swapped to 3.4's..... I'm going to bow outta this thread, I don't know squat about the newer motors, my exp. is in the 22r/re/rte's and 3vze's. Welcome to the board and have some fun!

Ya, I figure you were joking around. Yes it is a 3.4L. I guess I can wait on the o2 sensors then. What is OK for gas mileage? I think I'm not getting that great of a gas mileage but then again it is a SUV so I didn't think much of it.

Yeah, I read about that mod on cutting a hole in the OEM box. I'm thinking of getting a air intake down the line though so that mod won't be needed.

What is a good maintanence book I can get? Where is the fuel filter located? Thanks again

 

Mileage varies quite a bit around here depending on mods and driving style. With my mods and my lead foot, I get a documented 17.3 MPG mixed city/hwy driving; and that's over the last 2 years. I have been as low as 14, and as high as 21.

The best maintenance book is the FSM (Factory Service Manual), but those are expensive. If you can turn a decent wrench, you can get through a lot on these rigs. I have swapped axles, front brakes, replaced a transfer case seal, changed out the fuel filter, and put on headers without a FSM. It all depends on what you plan on doing and how mechanically inclined you are.

You would be very surprised at all the info you can get from this site alone. I personally want to get the FSM, even if I can turn a decent wrench. They give you torque specs and list little quirks that you might never guess were there.
