Need Advice

So I want to put a new muffler on my 4runner. I just want a better sound. I was thinking Cherry Bomb Vortex. So I take my car to Mineke to have them give me a price. While it is being checked out I do some research online. There are two prices, like $64 for the smaller one and $70ish for the larger one. I'm pretty sure I need the large one. I have a '98 Limited 3.4.

They call back and quote me $214 dollars including tax. That is for muffler and labor. Is this quote correct? They said that it wasn't a direct bolt on. I knew that it probably wouldn't be, but it's not that hard to make it fit. All they have to do is cut about a half inch off one side of the pipe and weld it all up.

They also said that I have a pin size hole in my muffler. I'm not sure if I really do or they are just trying to sucker me in to buying the muffler. If I really do should I be concerned about this?

Thanks for your input.

I might look into the Flowmaster 40 series. Aren't they quite a bit more expensive? What do you think about the labor costs(over $100)?

Vortex baby! Heck yeah, but that bad boy is loud!!!

If i remember Jason B. at Burtmanindusties.com sells em for 89 bucks. Other options are ebay or Summitracing.

It shouldn't be more than 40-60 bucks for a typical muffler shop to weld it in. That Meineke prices is ridiculous.

Do a search here on mufflers and Vortex, there is a really good one with videos comparing sounds/tone, length, and make.

40 series sounds great too.

Thanks man. What do you like more Vortex or Flowmaster 40 series?

I called Meineke back today and found out what the problem was. They broke it down for me $83 for labor and $110 for the muffler. I can get the muffler for $70 shipped to my door. So that knocks $40 off the price.

I have the turbo mulffler on mine and had a muffler shop install it. It was about 100.00 bucks I think. It sounds good with a low tone and gets a bit louder when you mash on it. That V6 should sound good.

Clemsonfan- I'm gonna be bias and say Vortex. Don't get me wrong though the 40 series sounds sweet too, it just depends on the tone you are looking for. Some people say they get drone if you don't keep the rpms right...but thats just the way I ride my pedal. Another thing is that I have larger tires so it does stay in that range and my truck is also sound dampened so I don't hear my exhaust really unless the windows are down. Usually I am hittin my subs so that eliminates any/if drone.

I'm still trying to If i can do this right here are some of mine wheeling. I've got one in at 2.25 and two out at 2.5 flared near the tips to 3. Some will question "backpressure" about what I did, but I trust the guy who did the work for me and it was also for asthetics.

Sounds good man. I also have two subs, so I don't think I would hear anything either.

I was wondering about the size of the muffler becaue I thought I would need 2.25", but then I read on this site somewhere where you would want the muffler to be a little bigger like 2.5", so I was confused. I think I need 2.25" center inlet and 2.25" outlet offset.

$200 is way too high. I payed $98 for the muffler and installation. Id go to another shop, or buy one online and bring it to them.

Also, I have a 50 series with a turn down, and its nice. Not too loud, just deeper.

I was quoted 200 for the work I was gonna do this week. Cherry Bomb Vortex and brand new 2.25 pipe from the cat - back. Also with new hangers.

I might put a new cat on there - not sure yet.
