is my tranny going?
in the mornings when i leave 2nd gear ALWAYS take forever to get out of. It'll rev high until almost 3000 RPM not matter how light i apply the gas pedal.
Also, i noticed that i don't get as much roll as other automatic cars i've driven. Key word..."cars". This is the first truck i've owned so i'm not sure if it's a normal thing or not. Even on my slight inclined driveway my parents maxima will roll forward in "D" without any gas. My 4runner will either roll back slightly or just remain stationary when in "D". I'm not sure, but i don't think it's a good thing.
Even on flat pavement at a stop light when the light turns green i hardly move forward. If i do, it's god awfully slow.
Normal?? or bad??

i will roll slowly forward when flat or slight incline. it easily will roll backwards when on a steep driveway.
ECT switch engaged? that will alter shift (RPM) points
90k = time for change &/or flush

mine does the same thing. I believe it is connected to being cold. If you read the manual, I believe there is something there about not going into a certian gear until above a certain temp. Maybe they are connected.

I think the "certain" gear is overdrive(4th), not 3rd.

If I dont warm up my truck on really cold mornings, it will do the same thing. I just replaced my ATF and it still does it. I think its a pretty normal thing, its just like when you start up the truck, it has an automatic choke which keeps the RPM's high until its been warmed up.

derK,
My truck does exactly what you are describing as well. As most of the other yotatechers have described, its normal. As long as it isn't staying in the 3-4k rpm range when the truck gets to operating temperature, you should be fine.

I've got an 04 taco, and in the mornings, mine does the same thing, I figure its normal, it will hold 2nd till up around 3200 RPMs, trying to get the temp up, and then it will shift out, when it is warm it never does it.
My driving style is pretty hard, but always soft when the engine is "cold" (as in cold start, not as in cold outside)

my 95 runner does the same thing, it sucks because i live right next to the interstate, so on cold mornings, I can't get the thing over 55 without the engine sounding like its gonna blow up. (its the 3.0 of course)

My swapped 95 T-100 engine and tranny in my 89 does the same thing, it is right in the 95 factory service manual, when engine is cold, then the tranny will hold second gear until the engine has reached operating temp, or when you take off and get going faster. My truck will hold second until the temp gauge moves about a 1/4 of the way up, unless I speed up to 40-50, then it will shift into third anyways. I can still merge onto the freeways when cold, the 3-4000 rpms in second when cold doesnt sound right, unless you live in sub arctic climate that might cause warming up issues. I would check for tranny trouble codes saved in the ecm.
