After putting on some undercoat on my truck this wknd, I noticed that the muffler has a tear in it.

I was wondering if anyone ever used this on their muffler?

You can try but I would think from the Thermal cycling it will not hold very long.

Unless it can expand and contract with the muffler .

Then you also need to consider it is on a truck that bounces and jars etc

Maybe weld it ??

Time for a new muffler??

I just wanted to save some $$$, because if I change the muffler, I will prob have to change the tail pipe too. Because they look pretty rusted together.

I haven't heard a difference, but I can see the exhaust coming out from the muffler when it's cold out.

Just wanted to see if anyone has tried it

 

If you have skills and the muffler is not too tin and/or rusted, you may be able to weld a plate over the separated area and maybe give yourself a winter.

Its best just to replace the exhaust if able. Pipe, cat & muffler. Rock Auto may sell a OE kit that has the pipe & muffler. Cat will need to be bought separately.

 

It seems I replace my exhaust about every two years

I just bought a Muffler and Tail pipe for My 2000 a Walker Price was not bad and shipping cheaper then Rock Auto.

One really needs to look at shipping costs they can be a deal breaker.

 

in that spot i'd think the JB weld will work. just make sure you clean it really well beforehand and perhaps scratch in some scoring marks to give it some bite so it stays put. i was at local auto parts last month looking at exhaust section and recall them having some sort of similar exhaust epoxy. I'd just use the JB weld heat version and if it doesnt work then alter weld it shut...or not. i had swiss cheese muffler for 3yrs lol.

 

Thanks for the info guys, I'm going to give the epoxy a shot, it's only $8. I still need to replace my rotors and brake pads, I have the death wobble going on. So this exhaust tear will have to wait if it doesn't work. I just bought a wire brush attachment for my drill to clean/ scuff it up a bit. I'll post some pics after its done and some pics after a couple of days of running with it.

 

How do you know this hole is even a problem? Pressurize the exhaust system with compressed air to find out.

My stock muffler is coming apart at the seams but does not leak air. There are many layers for sound deadening, so a hole in the outside shell doesn't really matter.

 

I had noticed exhaust fumes coming out the hole over the winter, when warming up the truck. and since I due for a car inspection in November, I wanted to see if I could seal the hole off so I won't have any issues passing inspection.

 

Regardless, seal it. It will collect salt and other debris otherwise.

 

How about using aluminum muffler tape? I heard before that it works ok.
