Hey all, I have this little idea in my head of designing a ram air intake system for my 86' pickup. My plan is to do the battery/intake swap, remove the passenger side headlight, and basically have a cone filter where the headlight should be. i would then run some mandrel bent intake tubing to the efi. Pretty simple. Any thoughts on this? If it werent for my stock air box being beat to crap i wouldnt even bother with a CAI but since my air box has a hole and is basically sucking in radiator heat i thought ahh, what the hell. This is kinda over the top but i figured i would do a little experimenting and have some fun. Let me know your thoughts guys!

Myself I would just get another stock intake box .

I have never had luck with cone filters but if you only use it in dry weather .

It is your truck do as you will.

To me, the risk of being pulled over for having not just a non working but missing headlight, does not out weigh the power increase (if any) that would be gained by attempting this.
I would just get a new stock air box.

I live in cave creek arizona so i dont think the dry weather thing is going to be a problem, it doesnt get much more dry than where I live.

As far as having a missing headlight, I have 2 Rigid Dually SAE approved LED pods that function as a second pair of headlights, I already checked with the local sheriff and they are totally legal.

Yeah... I still wouldn't do it. Around here, if you drive without the OEM headlights functioning (even with aux lighting) you will get pulled over for having a headlight out. Maybe the laws in AZ are different but even then, you probably wont gain anything from this. If you want forced induction, bolt on a turbo.

Eh, I've tried "ram air" setups before and at WOT you're still sucking faster than 70MPH wind can blow.

The problem is that, at the relatively low speeds our vehicles travel, the actual ram air pressure boost is abysmally low, slightly less than .2 psi at 70mph, and even less at lower speeds. Given an atmospheric pressure of 14.7 psi, a .2psi boost represents a 1.3% horsepower increase, or about 1.5 extra horsepower for your 120HP 22re. Not very exciting, I don't think.

Ram air boost really only works usefully at speeds above 200 mph. At 600 mph, for example, a jet engine can pick up a 50% boost with a properly designed scoop.

thanks for the info guys, i definitely learned a lot! Ill probably just go with the lce cai kit because its only about $200 and i am in need of a new intake anyways!

The LCE intake is a hot air intake too. Just sucks air right from the engine bay. The only CAI I've seen aside from custom made one-offs is the factory airbox.

what about a safari snorkel? It would be really useful for when i cross water and it sucks in air from the outside!
