Does anyone have that metallic/silver reflective tint on their trucks? Anyone familiar with the legality of it??? I'm lookin' to possibly do this..but certainly need to look into it further.. any thoughts?

I do...but you need to have clear glass, not factory tinted or it's not gonna work. I don't like the heavy mirror as it will look like a mirror from the INSIDE at night, and all you'll see is your dash lights. I made that mistake on my Datsun truck. I have the legal 35% on the front sides and 20% all behind.

I added Johnson's 50% metallicized tint to my front windows. It makes a nice blend.

Here in PA, you can't have any tint on the front windows, but when you go with something like this, you won't get caught.

IMHO metallic tint is a bad idea. I say this because it will soon go out of style (It is very "faddish"), and then people will laugh at you for having that gay out-of-style mirror tint, and then you'll have to remove it and put on regular tint anyway.

But thats just my opinion.

I don't think he's talking about true mirror tint. Just tint that has metallic properties in it. These will never fade like some dyned tints.

Well, if i need clear glass.. is the factory tint easily removed? Butnut, did you originally have factory tint on your truck? I love how your current tint looks on your ride.. i think your truck may have been where i initially gained interest in this sort of thing..

DrummerDave,

I wasn't aware that metallic tint was "in style"..? I've seen it very few times.. not really caught up in any fads here.. My ride is black and all chromed out... so the metallic tint would play into my little color scheme.. but, i'm not too concerned w/ others opinions.. 'long as i like it.. call me gay.. it's cool

Sorry bro, factory tint is a coating that cannot be removed. One of the many reasons I wanted a base model with clear glass. I like the mirror tint. It reflects light and heat and is in the hot sun every day. It looks kool with my color and chrome...I'm not gay ...but I am happy!
Damn Jason, I love seein' your Runner...

I removed my old tint and accidently took off some of the factory tint - with a razor you can scrape into the coating but guess what? I don't think you will get it all off. I went with 35% all the way around and I have a slightly metallic look where the new tint is behind the factory tint - mostly noticable at night.

factory smoke

If i'm not mistaken, the factory "tint" on the later 3Gens comes in the form of smoked glass. Getting the color out of that is like taking the green out of a coca cola bottle..

Mine has a brownish tint to it that goes to the very edge. I thought it was in the glass until I scratched it with a razor while I was removing my old purple tint.

If you have factory tint, no. It just can't be scraped off. Not 100% sure if the 3rd gen is coated inside, I know for sure the 2nd gen is. My friend had a tinter add darker tint on, so he scraped it to clean it. :pat: It ruined the glass with razor scratch marks. He had to replace the glass as it was fugly. You can replace all your glass with factory clear glass, but the glass and labor will be too damn expensive. Not impossible, just costly.

yeah every 3rd gen window tints (basically everything besides the windshield and two front windows) are dipped.if anyone wanted to make it clear they would have to replace every piece of glass.imo it'll be costly and not worth it cuz u can use that money to do some performance mod. but then again its not my rig so to each his/her own

Ok, so just as a post-disclaimer, I wasnt saying you are gay if you have mirror tint.
This is the point I was trying to make - you know when you see the guys running around in something like a Buick Skylark (or Excort, etc) with 12" wire rims, a big wing on the back, and 2 inch chrome around each wheel well, and all that crap.
And you just look at them, shake your head, and say "That is so gay." Maybe that car was in style in 1996, but, now it is out of style and just gay.

Where Im from there is a big mirror tint movement going on. Typically, it fades as you go to the top or what-not. I see it being out of style in 6 months, and then (just like the wings, or wire wheels thing) I see there being a mirror-tint backlash, where people will just shake their heads. . . .

Thats all Im saying.

Hey Dave, it's kool, I did'nt take any offense. I know the look you speak of...I recovered my son's Pearl drumset for Christmas. It's screamin' yellow. I was gonna do the Travis Barker multi-colored metal flake, but he wanted the yellow. Rock on...
